I have my first wedding cake coming up and was wondering what is the best to put between the tiers? this will be a 10" 8"and 6" square cake. I have only ever done one other stacked cake. my question is do I go with the cardboard cake cirlces or those cake seperator plates I have seen? It seems that the plates would help in the dismantaling of the cake but I didn't know if you would be able to see it.... any input would be helpful!
I use the cardboard circles (for a square cake I just cut them to the right size). Cut the boards to the exact size of the cake (10, 8, 6) and when you frost the cake or cover with fondant, it will cover the boards and you wont be able to see them, and if you can, your border will cover it up. To dismantle, I use the cake server and an offset spatula, slide them under the board and lift up carefully.
Also, I got from other CCers to cover the cardboard seperators with clear shelf liner. I tried it, and it works really well. It keeps the carboard firm and stiff.
Good luck!!
Is this stacked or tiered? Many people use seperator plates others use wooden boards. I like the wood because it is readily available and strong.
I have done a few different things....using a large boarder to cover the wood base. make the base tha same size as the cake so you can ice it to cover it. use colored foil and it looks like a ribbon almost. i've seen people just cover the board and it is visable but the cake is far mor a site to look at that the board so no one cares.....
Shelf liner isn't made with food safe materials so you might re-think using it if it touches the cake. You can use wax paper with double sided tape since the tape won't touch the actual cake for a safer alternative. ![]()
I have always used cardboard cake boards and dowels.. but I am looking into buying either the stress free support system or the single plate support system.

I use wood or plates and the STRESS FREE SUPPORTS....I LOVE them. I have been using them for a number of years...... BEST, hands down, investment I have EVER made.....
Indydebi-- I saw that you said you use cakeboards and separator plates even on stacked cakes. That sounds nice and sturdy. Thanks. ![]()
