I see so many cakes in here that are decorated with real ribbons. I was just wondering if this is safe or would the die run into the icing? If you are using fondant is that ok too? I would love to put ribbons on a cake but worry if I may end up poisoning someone lol Any advice?
i have read where people cut wax paper or is it parchment paper to the same width as the ribbon so that the grease from the icing doesnt make the ribbon look weird, in that case I suppose it would also keep the ribbon from touching the cake...
but I have never done this.
yes I would like to know too!!! I dont really ever use real ribbons, but I JUST did a chocolate fondant cake and the fondant bled through the white ribbon! I never thought of that as a possible thing happening so unfortunately I had no way to compensate for the problem!
So I too would like to know any advice
I tried finding a post on this topis but had no luck. I was trying to remember what someone wrote about it...I think they put something on the ribbon itself....like they rubbed something on it so it wouldnt look greasy or something....but I cant remember what!!! Agh! Maybe someone else can help...?????
If you will coat the back of the ribbon with waxed paper (just iron it on the back of the ribbon, using a cloth to protect the iron), you will have "leak-proof" ribbon. I use ribbon all the time, it does not affect the taste and it won't make anyone sick, unless you are using old ribbon that might have been used for something else. New ribbon, on the spool, is just fine to use on cakes!
I've used ribbons for several years with no problem. I have never ironed on the wax paper. I always just place the ribbon off the roll directly on the cake. I only use BC so I can't say about the fondant.
I've also used the rolls of craft pearls with no problem. I think both the ribbon & pearls add alot to a cake.
I've tried ironing the wax paper onto ribbon and it just won't work for me. Is there some trick for the wax and/or paper to stick to the ribbon (yes, the iron was on)?
I have a wedding cake coming up and it has ribbon on it. I am concerned also with the grease bleeding onto the ribbon. Is there a certain side of the wax paper that needs to be ironed on? I would be sooooo mortified if the ribbon was splotchy with grease ![]()
this cake will be all buttercream icing.
