Ok I looked through all my bookmarked fancy schmancy cake decorator sites- you know, the ones where things are suspended in midair somehow- defying gravity etc. LOL
Ok so this friend of my sister's is BIG into giraffes. So the giraffes in here (3D ones) wont do because they're for kiddiepoos lol. I am 'leaning' towards doing an FBCT of a savannah scene- my sister is painting her the same scene- she's an artist. I was thinking possibly of using the same photo she's using for my FBCT.
HOWEVER. because I am certifiably INSANE, I also am pondering doing a 3D. My ponderings are leading me to mull over construction and logistics though. I've seen tall narrow structures before on here and elsewhere. I'm wondering what would be the sturdiest way to make a long giraffe neck. I know it wouldnt be cake. It'd be a dowel or some sort of foam rod maybe covered in MMF. Just wondering from experience, who here can share with me some structural secrets, how to make the neck stay upright -The body of the giraffe will be cake and under/between the legs will be 'invisible' cake. (That is what I'm thinking if I can do it logistically lol)

Anyway, any ideas on structure to keep a long neck upright-how to position dowels and what not. Greatly appreciated. (Also feel free to tell me to not try something that insane without prior experience doing such structures. I know the FBCT would look awesome. Just that because I'm crazy I insist on taking on challenges go figure icon_redface.gif

It seems to me that if you used a dowel long enough to reach the bottom of the cake (touching the cake board) and wrapped the length sticking out in fondant and painted the spots on, that might work. You are using styrofoam for it's head, right?

You would need to sculpt the fondant so that it tapers from the top to the bottom and keep the neck straight, but you could turn the head as if the giraffe is looking to the side.

I think it will be a definite challenge, but extremely doable! Good luck!

I've seen some where they use rice crispy treats for the legs which you could form over dowls and or pillers and then stand a cake on them for the body.

If you are looking for a FBCT I've done a few on giraffes. They might give you some ideas.

Good luck and please post the pics when you are done.

I'm thinking there must be a way that you can get a piece of wood and screw four dowel sticks into it and then attatch another slightly smaller rectangular board on top and then put the body (cake) of the giraffe on the top board.......get another dowel for the neck stick a styrofoam ball on top or block and carve to the shape of a giraffe's head and frost the cake and cover the whole thing in fondant......or if you cover the neck separately from the body maybe you could make a fondant flower necklace for the giraffe to hide the seems and then cover the four dowel rods on the bottom for the four legs.......seems like it would work......hopefully I explained it the way I see it in my head LOL

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions so far - her bday isnt til the 23rd- I'm thinking though if I'm going to do the 3D- I have a bit of construction to do. See what might work. I think after work tomorrow I might fiddle around with the dowel/board idea. (today is play at the fair/go to concert day- no cake play lol)
Will keep yall updated as to the logistical possibilities LOL

ljhow, I saw your 2 when I was searching originally- and really especially loved the one with bent legs drinking from the water. VERY cute- I'm possibly leaning to something like that if I give up on the 3D idea- I have a few beautiful savannah/sunset/bonsai tree silhouettes /pictures saved to faves to draw from.
