I am going to do a package/gift cake and I want the top/lid to look semi opened. How would I support that? with dowels?? I was thinking of putting the square layer on top of a cake board and covering with fondant and then using dowels to hold it up and using tissure paper to cover the dowels? make sense? Any help or advice would be great.

Since you are going to let the tissue paper come out of the cake box..couldnt you dowell in several areas? Sorry I am of no help I have never done one but...sounds like it would work. Like do a fondant "tissue paper" so that nothing inbetween the cakes show so therefore you wouldn't have to worry about the dowell showing. I'd like to know the true answer to this also icon_biggrin.gif

I know! That does seem like it would make the most sense right? I was also thinking of maybe doing the lid as a "dummy" cake out of styrofoam and then using the dowels. It would be lighter then regular cake and maybe a little more stable. anyone with words of wisdom???????

You might want to take a look at my instructions for the hatbox cake. That might help.

Take a look in my gallery at the bridal shower cake I did for my granddaughter. The top was just a piece of styrofoam covered in fondant. After covering the bottom cake in fondant and adding the fondant "tissue paper" and lingerie, I just laid the top across it. It was light enough that I didn't need to dowel it. I hope that helps.

I've use both real cake and styrofoam "lids" on box/gift cakes. If you need the servings, use the real cake for the lid, if not, the styrofoam works out nice.
I doweled both using the wooden dowels with about an inch and a half sticking out of the bottom cake (the lid resting on top of them). With the styrofoam lid you can sharpen the tips of the dowels and press down lightly on the lid and it stays pretty much secure.

P.S.: you may want to make the tissue half and half gumpaste/fondant. You can roll it really thin and it looks more realistic in my opinion.
