This is a free for all say what you like I am open to suggestions. This is such a difficult medium, but I am not ready to give up yet. To all you fabulous fondant modellers (there are many on CC!) you are truly artists! I take my hat off to you!

I got her mouth really wrong, but what really bothers me is her arms.... how to you get the proportions correct from shoulders to wrist, I find this soooooo difficult.

Can anyone suggest a good book for me to buy, I'd really like to get into modelling.

Thanks in advance
LL

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif OH trent I can't stop laughing... you're so right she does look like one of those scary dolls from a horror movie!

My husband said he thought she looked like one of those blow up dolls from a 'naughty shop' icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

I think she's kinda cute! but I think it may be her shoulders need to be wider. A person's shoulders usually are wider than their head. I think the length of her arms are correctly proportioned. I also love the pattern of her dress!

I think she is adorable and the way you did the face makes me think of one of those porcelain dolls. But I have to laugh when I read "trouble with my figure" lol I'm a little overweight and thought jeeze she's not the only one with trouble with her figure lol I have lost 73 lbs in the last year and still have about 30 to go but as we all know those cake scraps and broken cookies can reek havoc with a diet lol

maybe if you put a collar on her dress, that might hide the arm attachment and make the shoulders look bigger

Is this your first figurine?

It is great! Forming figurines is something I have learned by trial and error, and experience. You are still familiarizing yourself with the medium. Once you have handled it a while and learned what it can and cannot do, you will find ways to perfect your artistry.

But, I will just say, that you are well on your way. Her nose is adorable. The dress is so cute. There is so much more you have done well , than done poorly, with this figure.

Remember that nothing is ever going to be perfect, but you will find little ways to disguise imperfectios--such as the suggestion to place a collar at the top to give the shoulders more width. ( Great suggestion by skinnycakelady! )

There is a book by Nicholas Lodge that might be helpful.
It is THE ART OF SUGARCRAFT --PASTILLAGE & SUGAR MOULDING

Keep up the good work! You are doing great! thumbs_up.gif

I agree with scary doll from a horror movie, naughty blow up doll. I have to say I have only seen in movies, and the tip about putting a collar to hide seams is a very good tip for me to keep in mind, her body is ok nothing wrong with it and it's just her expressions make her look unhappy maybe sad but who am I? I haven't tried making figurines although I am very interested in doing some day but still have a lot of work to do with basic decorating, with all that said overall if you put this doll with all other things included in your cake I don't think anyone would notice any of the things we did only because you pointed it out. I think once on the cake the dolly or girl would look great, I can't wait to try this myself you are very brave, just my .02 icon_biggrin.gif

I think she looks pretty good the only thing I would change is the mouth and the arms. Did you make the arms out of one piece and then lay them across top of shoulders? I would make the arms in two separate pieces and make the top of the arm rounded to make the shoulder part and attach them to the sides of the body instead of on the top just press slightly with you thumb on each side where the arm is to attach so it just gives you a slight indention to the arm against . This will make her shoulders a little broader also. I break of a little piece of spaghetti and stick that into the body where the arm is to go with a little bit sticking out the then put the arm onto the spaghetti helps hold it in place while whatever you used to stick it together dries. See pic below.

Please also note that longer hair is good for covering up anything around the neck and shoulders you aren't happy with.
