Can I write on a Color Flow image with piping gel? I know buttercream breaks down Color Flow, will piping gel hurt it?

I have made a 'volcanic cloud' with color flow and I wanted to write Happy Birthday on the cloud. The cloud will be attached to a lollipop stick and then put on top of the volcano.

Just wondering if I should do that or not. Thanks!

I'm sorry, I do not know the answer to that question, but I would sure like to see the outcome when you are done!

I haven't done color flow, in my wilton course book they recommend using the edible food pens to write on color flow designs, I believe. It is the grease in BC that breaks down the color flow, so I've been told, and I believe piping gel is basically gooey sugar without grease, so if you have a chunk of color flow to experiment on, I'd try it. I'd be scared to do it on your volcano plume with out an experiment first, though! It could be the difference in moisture of the piping gel to color flow could affect it? The other possibility would be to pipe royal icing on the color flow, those should be compatible.

Another idea if the piping gel doesn't work would be to thin some icing color with clear vanilla and paintbrush the writing on it.

My Wilton instructor kind of scared me off trying color flow, have you done a lot with it?

Man, I was going to get those food pens, but they were $7.99 so I didn't. I'm such a cheap skate! icon_lol.gif

This is actually my first use of color flow. I definately need practice. Since it's an all white cloud, it looks okay, but it didn't flow out to the outline in all areas so I had to break some of the outline off! If it had been different colors it would have been a disaster. It also doesn't look all shiny like I've seen in books. I think I may have put too much in the fill-in areas.

It was okay though...definately something I would try again!

Since the cake is due tonight, I think that when I deliver it I will write on the cloud with the piping gel. They should eat in within an hour or so of delivery. Hopefully it will be okay. At least everyone will get to see it, that is the main thing, right? hee hee icon_lol.gif

Why don't you pipe with a #1 tip the "happy bday" with royal icing or the same color flow. Just wait until your color flow is dry, then pipe over.

thats a good idea. the piping gel has water and that may dissolve the colour flow. the pen, if you press to hard you could put a hole in the design. i think using the royal icing would be your best bet.

Well, the piping gel seemed to work fine. Granted it was on the color flow for a very, very short time. Truthfully, I was looking for a short cut because I didn't want to make another batch of icing just for a few letters. icon_redface.gif

Here is the cake! One miscalculation - the lollipop stick was too long. The volcano cake was on a cake board, which I didn't think about. Nothing I could do about it! Oh well!
