I finally made a cake that I'm proud of, yay!. My mom broke out her Southern Living cookbook and helped me out with the particulars. Finally a scratch recipe I'm proud of (besides the ubl and my one for cupcakes).

As you can see my decorating leaves little to be desired and some of the crumbs got caught up in it. But nevertheless, I'm proud of my little creation (even if it is simple)! icon_biggrin.gif Oh yeah and for the record, Echo just happens to be my name icon_smile.gif .

Well Echo, I'd say for a first cake, you did a good job. You should be proud of yourself. We all have to start somewhere.

I like your colors you used, your lettering is fairly straight, and you've done a good job trying to smooth out the bc icing. In my opinion, smoothing the icing is one of the hardest things to do. Have you read the article on CC about the Viva paper towel method? If not, you might search for it under articles. It really has helped me.

Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Congrats!

Hi, Echo,

Welcome to the wonderful world of cake decorating!

Your first cake is fine - it's no different from the first cake most of us have done. My Beary Nice Day cake (my first Wilton cake) was fun to do, and I will always cherish it, but I am soooo glad my skill level has elevated as high as it has! The next one is always better.

Thanks! I was showing mom some of the photos in the galleries and almost decided to delete my post. You guys are so good! But she talked me out of it. Tomorrow she's going to turn me loose on making a white cake from scratch and we're going to work on borders and leaves. That much she can do. Hopefully I can get a hold of my aunt who's the decorating diva of the family and have her help me out as well. I'm just glad my scratch cake turned out delicious. My sister is on slice #2!

Hang in there girl...its all a matter of how interested and serious you are in improving your skills...you took the first step already..looks like you got good potential to me icon_wink.gif

The main thing is to practice, practice, practice..the more you practice the better your gonna get, bottom line...use your family and friends for opportunity's to decorate cakes or just bake cakes to have around the house when the urge hits you thumbs_up.gif

I just bought my Wilton Course 1 kit a few days ago and I had been practicing on some parchment paper. I just had to try it out on an actually cake and it was fun. As I stated earlier, I'm going to try my hand at making a white cake from scratch and yup, I plan on practicing on that one as well. My friends are going to be in hog heaven or hate me for their increasing waistlines icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Omg tell me about it. I can't stay away from this site and to think, I found it on "accident." It was one of those things where I was looking for one thing but came across something else lol. Definitely worked out in my favor icon_biggrin.gif.
