Oh thejoys of motherhood. my little boy (3 years old) swallowed a penny on Friday ... normally I don't freak out abotu this stuff but I foundthat pennies minted after 1982 are primarely zinc, with only a coating of copper. when zinc comes in contact with your stomach acid it becomes as corrosive as a car battery. if in there long enough it can cause ulcers and liver/kidney failure (well the liver and kidney failure would come with ingesting more than 1 penny but the ulcer could happen with just 1 penny). ANYWAY after 3 days of looking through poo there was no penny so we were informed to go to the Dr. and they did an x-ray tomake sure it wasn't stuck in his esophagus and hausing corrosion or burns to his esophagus. Luckely it has made its way to his intestines and is hopefully on its way out (which again YUCK I have to make sur eI find it otherwise after 7 days it is off tothe Dr for another x-ray andpossible surgical removal)

so anyway watch your kids (and pets) because pennies made after 1982 are toxic and if ingested can potentially cause serious problems especially if more than 1 was ingested.

Here is an x-ray for your enjoyment lol it is pretty funny to look at and will I am sure make a great page in our scrapbook.

OMG! I think I'd puke if I had to look through pooh, but if it was for my kids I guess anything is possible. Your a good mommy. I never knew that about the penny's. Thanks for posting and I hope your human piggy bank looses his extra change soon.

We have one of these xrays! My youngest son will be 5 soon, and was trying to be a piggy bank, so he swallowed a quarter! The easiest way to look thru the poo is go to the dollar store and buy a strainer. Put the poo in it, take it outside to a spot your kids don't play, and use the hose. The poo will rinse thru the strainer, and the penny will stay. Good luck and have fun!

My Son preferred stuffing his nose full of objects. My favorite was the blue jelly bean. i tried getting it out and he got tired and beagn to cry as he cried he had blue snot! Trip to ER to have it removed. Trip 2 to ER was for makeup sponge torn in small pieces stuffed in his nose. we've had beans, rocks, candy, you name it. He's 9 now and no longer stuffs his treasures in his nose.
