Q About Painting With Dust

I will be making a shoe box, purse and shoe cake, I will be using fondant and pastillage and gumpaste, can I paint on all of that with luster or petal dust?? I want to get a girly, shinny and even efect, I've benn practicing painting on fondant with luster dust and I can see the brush strokes, how can I avoid that?? icon_sad.gif

I just let it dry a bit in between coats and I do probably about 3-4 coats of the stuff. I also helps to have the same base color as the luster dust or use white a white base to start with.
