Is there a trick to getting BC to look almost as smooth as fondant? A special icing recipe? Medium or firm consistency? I really don't like the powdered sugar tasting BC, but I haven't had luck with any of the alternatives.

Advice?

Smooth it with a hot metal spatula, use a turntable if you're not already. That's my way.

Also look in the tutorials for the Melvira Method, she has worked out the details and made a great tutorial for another way to get smooth cakes.

Melvira method definitely! I used to think I was pretty darn good at smoothing icing ... until Melvira.

There is no other way. None. Hands down.

I hate to say it, but Melvira's Method didn't work for me. I know it had to be me and my frosting though. If I use the roller on my icing I mess it up, but if I use it on a paper towel, I have better luck.

I also like to use my fondant smoother on the Viva and I use copy paper also.
