I am making my first wedding cake. I read that a two layer 12inch heart cake feeds 50 some people? Do I need to seperate the two layers with a cardboard cake plate? I am thinking that is the only way to get so many pieces from a tall not large cake. Any help understading this would be greatly appriecated. Thank you in advance.

That sound like tiny Wilton size pieces and I don't think you can realistically get 50 pieces from that size cake.... my chart (which is on the big side) says a 10" round (which is more cake then a heart) will feed approx. 30

I know there are many different charts and theories regarding cake size and wedding portions are smaller than party portions....

What they mean is 2 single layered 12 inch cakes stacked on top of each other with filling. This cake would not be more than 6 inches high but the slices would be smaller so you may get 50 pieces but I doubt it.I would make another tier or a larger base cake.

Here's the link to Earlene's chart. It is more accurate than the Wilton chart.
