I'm a member of the Red Hat Society (women over 50 having a good time) and I offered to bring a red hat cake for dessert to our annual picnic next week. Somehow it turns out they are going to use my cake for door prize..now the pressure is on!! I've tried searching the galleries on CC for ideas but I come up with over a thousand results and very few pics of hats. Any red hatters out there ever made a hat cake? I'm thinking of using the Wilton contour pan for the main part and covering it with enough fondant to make a brim. Do you think that will work? Help, please.

here's a search that returned only 20 pics.

HTH

your plan would work.

a soccer ball pan would too for a more rounded shape.

Thanks the pics are really helpful and I see what you did Doug to refine your search so not everything with "red" OR "hat" came up. I'll post pic after I get it done.

For the uninitiated, Red Hat Society is s way for women over 50 to meet and socialize with other women over 50. The poem that started the whole thing talks about growing old and wearing red and purple at the same time. I guess at the time that was a social faux pas. I live out in the sticks and found it a great way to meet people when I moved here. That was before I discovered cake decorating!

Doug - there is a local organization around here for men called the flannel shirt society....
