I know in the us they generally price by the slice. How do the UK decorators price their cakes? I ask this because my local cake store lady says I'm to cheap!! icon_sad.gif

I normally write a price list of all the ingredients I've used including boards, boxes etc. Add about £5-£10 gas and/or electric (depending on cooking times) then £10 for making it. This generally adds to between £30-£40. extra charges are then added for flowers. HTH (if you keep a copy of all cake ingredients it saves re-writing them all the time)

Hi - so glad I found this post as I was wondering about this today.

I hate trying to work out what to charge but my DH and friends think I am too cheap and I dont want to give this impression. I was given the go ahead by my local council last week to sell from my house so I think I need a price hike to reflect that I am trying to make some money from this.

I have never taken more than £25 for a cake but my last 2 in the gallery have taken me several hours giving me a working wage of about £3 an hour!

I was thinking about having a base price depending on pan size and then extras depending on decoration -but what for these extras I dont know.

I tend to try and work out the basic cost of ingredients and then base the rest of it on how quick or difficult the cake is. Your cakes are defo to cheap. My local cake shop has a basic 8 inch round cake with a bit of patch work detail for £25 thats their basic cheapest cake. The lady who owns it is great and has offered to price the cakes I have done to give me a better idea of what I should charge. Will let you know the outcome.

That would be great, thanks! What a nice cake lady to help you out like that.
I didn't realise you were from the UK when I commented on your UFO cake earlier. That was really cute!
