Hello everyone,

I am new here and was very pleased to discover this site.
I have try fondant for the 1st time, using a recipe from "the well decorated cake" and I have failed so miserably that I feel ridiculous. This fondant thing was so heavy and when I put it on the cake, it was so bulky that I would not call it icing. Also it showed some cracks besinde being very difficult to roll.

Am I the only one? Is fondant that difficult to work with? I feel so down after this experience. It looked so simple until now.

Have you had such experience?

Thanks

I'm so sorry you first experience with fondant was so bad. I find using MMF is easy to work with and easy to make. I agree, it is heavy, but if it's rolled reasonably thin, but not too thinly, it goes on the cake like a dream, is a wonderful surface to decorate and even taste good. Please try again. (The recipe for MMF can be found under "recipes".)

Why not try the MMF recipe on this site. I love it . I have found now that just after making a couple of batches its almost as soft as Play Doh . And it is so easy to make . Dont give up you can do it. You can also flavor it any flavor you want . The last batch I made I used butter and vanilla flavoring it was really good. HTH Also you can add your color when you are melting the Marshmallows.

Hey Creole!
Don't be discouraged...I had trouble the first time I used fondant, as well. I think the smoothing the sides without getting creases is the most difficult part.

Keep trying! I have had so many experiences like yours when trying new cake decorating mediums, and I get down like you did. But I also remind myself that there are things about decorating that I feel confident about, and I let that carry me through the "bigtime failures".

(WOW! Who ever thought someone could get this psycho-analytical about cake decorating?!?!?! I've really lost it!!!) icon_smile.gif

Can you tell I'm passionate about this art?? icon_smile.gif
Keep trying, Creole, because you will have a stunning success that will be worth the effort!!!

I have yet to try to cover a cake with fondant, but I have made some figures and flowers. I used the marshmallow fondant recipe from here. There is even a tutorial on how to make it. Try it, I'm sure you will have better luck.

Please don't give up! Fondant takes practice, especially if you're trying to learn it by yourself. If you have a store nearby that sells Wilton pre-made fondant, buy a package of that and practice covering your cake pans with it. It's great to practice with, but nasty to eat. thumbsdown.gif Once you get the feel of that, throw it out and either make your own from now on or use Satin Ice if there's somewhere near you that sells it. It's what I use.

Please don't give up. Keep on trying. Fondant is supposed to be thin, but not paper thin.

Again, don't give up!!! Do it again and again and again, until you got it!!!

Your first time working with fondant and allready going to throw the towel? I f you really like cake baking and decorating you have to persevere and as the other addicts of Cake Central have said , practice. You'll surely get the hang of it and become an expert, believe me.

Inevitablly, the first time that you try something, it will occaionally go wrong. That's what this site is all about. To help you figure out how to do it right next time!

I know that you are probably just frusterated, as I would be. Want everything to be prefect the first time. I would suggest that you use the mmf next time though, it really works well!

Happy decorating

Hey I understand. But don't give up. It can be tricky to work with. In fact I'm in the middle of a cake right now that I'm putting fondant on. I took it off about 5 times before I got it to look 1/2 way good. Also each fondant is a bit different so try different ones. You can even mix two together to get it like you want.

Just keep working at it. When you get to upset, walk away and relax then go back. That is what I do.

In fact I better go get back to it right now.

I looked on here for the MMF recipe. I saw two different recipes. Any recommendations as to which is better. How does it taste?? The wilton one is the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted!! I used Fondx last. it is much better than the wilton brand. I havent used the satin ice but i hear it is good. But which one do you all recommend tastes the best??

Creole, at least you have tried fondant! I tried it once and swore never again ( okay, I'm working up the nerve again!). Don't give up. Just practice.

This is a wonderful place to come, thank you!!! I will give a try to the MMF recipe here as you suggested. I am expatriate in Germany and the Germans do not ice cake so I don't have access to much products so I have to make my own and order other things from the UK or the States.

Yesterday was a terrible day for me. I have a 4 months old baby who was crying often and I had to be interupted often but in the end I made a mess of the kitchen and he was often bored playing while I made this fondant.
I baked the cakes the day before and they all fall flat when cooling. There is no self raising flour here in Germany and the baking powder I find here does not seem to do the same job as in the states. I have been advised what to do by some friends, I will give it a try next time. Also, the oven temperature just is not right. I bought an oven thermometer and sometimes the temperature is right, other times, not. They put the oven next to the fridge and in the end none of them works right for it is a fight for them. Soon we will move anyway and I am expecting a better kitchen to bake icon_wink.gif.

I have some Marshmallow and I am going to give it a try now as my baby is playing.

Many thanks again!

I have made the MMF fondant and it is great!!! I have done successfully my flowers and more. Tomorrow I will bake the cakes.

About the MMF, can you please tell me how long it will keep and the best way to store it?

Many thanks,
