I've finally decided to try and make my 78 year old uncle who is a gadget nut a remote . He had everything running on a remote back when I was just a kid and way before most people used remotes. His latest is a wide flat screen TV that does everything short of paying the cable bill.

His favorite cake is a rum cake which is basically a rich buttermilk, butter cake with a rum sauce, no filling and no frosting and baked in a bundt or loaf pans. do you think I could use a 9by 15 pan and make 2 layers? I think it will need a filling of some sort but haven't a clue what. I'll need to frost it. Most remotes seem to be silver with black buttons or black with silver. If I use a crusting bc, can I use luster dust or something to make it shiny? I'll probably make buttons of MMF but he's not a real fan of any fondant so I probably shouldn't use black fondant to cover the entire cake(I'm not really good with fondant anyway).

If I sound nuts about one silly cake maybe I should mention that his wife is the person who started my interest is cake decorating. She always was making wedding cakes for neighbors who couldn't really afford a nice cake because she understood having a cake was important to a bride beause she didn't have a cake at all after eloping only knowing my uncle 3 weeks( And he spoke little English at all) They will be married 58 years this coming October. ( I think it may be time to bake them a cake this year) She's been to ill to decorate but she is always encouraging me.

Any suggestions on my remote would be appreciated so maybe I can stop stressing on his cake. Thanks for reading this long and meandering entry.

What about using modelling chocolate for the buttons? It tastes good and you can get the desired smooth appearance from it. Just a thought. I have used it a great deal on my cakes and have found it to be a lifesaver when I can't use fondant for detail.
Good Luck
Lynne

take a sheet cake, split in half lengthwise (long way)

fill and stack

now -- go grab one of your remotes and use it as a model for the shape and general placement of the buttons.

then have some fun w/ the labels -- "crabby neighbor OFF", "love the wife ON" etc.

-----

and if don't have the modeling chocolate like sparklynne suggested, cut outs from fondant/gumpaste would work for the buttons.

to get letters, numbers on buttons: edible markers or paintbrush dipped in food coloring.
