OK, so I did the 0 trans fat buttercream recipe that's in the recipe section and it came out great, smooths on great, tastes great - BUT, it smells funny!!
When I was taking it out of the bowl and putting it on the cake, all I could smell was butter.
Does this sound funny?? So I thought maybe something went bad or I did something wrong. It tasted fine and all my ingredients were fresh, but it smelled like butter!! Being it was the first time I made it, I gave it another shot with a new batch.....and again it smelled bad.
My old buttercream recipe smelled delicious....but with the new crisco, it doesn't work, so I tried the new one and ugh....stinky buttercream
!!
Has anyone had this problem??
I haven't tried the recipe you are referring to but I'm not sure I'd want to serve "stinky" buttercream.

it's funny because it's not so much sinky like I made the cake and it didn't smell bad really....it just smelled like butter and not that sweet smelling buttercream smell that I'm used to!
Oh my, you don't like the odor of butter. ![]()
If you're using the high humidity b/c recipe:

Why not just use some other extract/s that you do like.
I'm rather partial to creme bouquet, added to vanilla or almond.
If your new Crisco (while in the can) doesn't smell bad to you than it's the artificial butter extract that's bothering you.

Okay, here's the recipe:

Didn't know about this one. ![]()
But if the odor of real butter is offensive, you might want to try the high humidity recipe.
I just know that when I make my old buttercream recipe (which is half cup butter, half cup crisco, vanilla, sugar) I can smell a cake across the room - that sweet sugar/vanilla smell.
Now it's more of a butter smell and not the good melting butter on toast smell....it's the butter like stick of butter out of the fridge smell...
I don't know...does it sound stupid??? ![]()
