I have my first four tier cake order for this Saturday. It's for a 15th and the cake is 14,12,10,& 8 inch. It's buttercream then fondant. I definitely want to tier my cake at the reception. I'm a bit nervous about stacking evenly. Does anybody have any suggestions on stacking. Also, for the final dowel that goes through all the levels, do they sell dowel rods that long and if so, do I put the final dowel in at the reception? The cake has an arrangement that goes on top, so I'm not really worried about the small whole that the dowel will create. Thanks!!
stacking evenly........as long as your cakes are level you shouldn't have a problem...take a level with you to check the table it will be on-that will help.
They do sell dowels pretty long, but I've never purchased the ones that could go through 4 tiers. Some people might say that since you're assembling at the reception, you may not need a dowel, but I always put it through the bottom 2 or 3 just to make sure.
Good Luck!
Good Luck! I am interested too in finding out about doweling a stacked 4 tier.
I have done my 4 tier wedding cake you can see in my photos. I stacked 2 tiers with dowels then did the other 2 with dowels and placed them all together once I got to the reception. I have never used center dowel just dowels on each level. I had cake boards on each cake that rest on top. Also if you place a circle of wax paper the size of the cake board and cake the layers will not stick and they can remove cake and peel off wax paper. I hope I made sence. Good luck with it. I was nervous my first time doing this also.

This cake was the same size that you're making for yours. It was a vanilla buttercake with chocholate buttercream filling. The base tier was on a masonite board, all the others were on strong cardboard boards, then there were wooden skewers holding each tier, at least 6 per tier. I didnt put a dowel through the center, and i also assembled it at home, and took it assembled to the reception. Of course i drove like a turtle and my dad helped me to deliver it.

Oh my...I can't believe I got so many replies. This is my first time posting a question...I'm really overwhelmed with how helpful everyone here is. Thanks to all of you for your input. I will definitely post a picture once I'm done. Amy, I really like your idea about the wax paper circles. I think that will help me center.
Question for Nati. If I am going to assemble at the reception can I just put the bottom layer on a double cakeboard. It will be covered by flowers and the cake shouldn't be moved once I set it up or should I use something more firm?
Thanks again to all of you for your support! CC is THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boonenatie I just saw your cake picture!!!!! It's gorgeous!!!!!
Since you guys are being so helpful, I have another question. When I bake the cakes (I am using the deep pan sets) is there a trick to make sure each cake is the same width? Also, do you guys use a level regularly?
Thanks again!!!!!!

I dont use a level per se, I tort 90% or so of my cakes. I use a ruler and cut 4 or 5 layers off each cake. Because i use the same ruler all the layers are the same size and i get the same height for each cake.

Are you icing with buttercream? Be careful when you move the cake after being decorated, the board being cardboard will bend, and it will crack your icing. Sorry i forgot if you said you were using buttercream or fondant. If you're using fondant, it shouldnt be too much of a problem, your fondant may wrinkle but it wont crack.
