I am desperately trying to make a fondont/gumpaste loop bow. It is so hard! icon_mad.gif I was reading on a article here that the fondant/gumpaste should be rolled to 1/4 inches thick. I have not been rolling mine that thick and mine has been breaking? icon_cry.gif

1/4 inch seems so thick. Is that what most people roll it to?

TIA!
Amy

I'm making my first bow, too, and just posted some questions last night! I rolled mine out much thinner, as my first try was too thick and wouldn't hold together. However, I'm new at all of this and certainly not an expert yet, but that's my two cents worth!

Wilton recommends that you roll your fondant to 1/16th of an inch for the bow. That is equivalent to the thickness of a dime. Place a dime next to your fondant after rolling out and measure it that way for thickness.

After you get your bow pieces made and pinch the ends together, stand the bow on it's side and place tissue inside the open area to help the bow keep it's shape. After it's dry or had had some time to start drying, assemble but leave the tissue until fully dry.

I am interested in this also....I have lost my rings for my roller so its hard to get the right thickness for the loops for the bow.

Here is the bow I am wanting to do http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_90517.html

hey all, I wanted to share with you what I use to DRY my bow loops. My dh and I made this with materails from the harware store..the middle is a railing like for a porch or stairs and all the extenders are various sizes of dowels. I also use paper towel rolls and wrapping paper rolls slid over the dowels for different sized loops. Each roll or dowel is covered in wax paper.

I add tylose to my fondant and roll quite thin, not sure exact measurement. cut your loops the size you want, drape over the dowels and pinch the ends together. Let them dry from AT LEAST two days.

Then you can use whatever "glue" you want to hold the loops together when you assemble your bow. I use melted chocolate the same color as the fondant.

I have a bow to do this week and will try to take pics of the process if ya'll are interested.

I have only made one bow and while making it I got very frustrated with the fondant so I went to straight gum paste and had much more succes. I rolled my gum paste thin like 1/16 embossed it and then brushed with luster dust, pinched it together on the ends laid the loops on their sides and let them dry. Here is the picture of my bow.

Hope this helps.

If you add a little gum-tex to your fondant it will add elasticity to it so it won't break. I would also recommend a 50/50 blend of fondant and gumpaste. I've found that fondant alone has real problems with heat and humidity (unless your area is free of these two devils). I use a mitten rack to dry mine on. I cut a piece of pvc pipe into little pieces and drape my loops over them and let them dry. Here's a gumpast bow I made using this technique. My loops were wider but same technique used.

How did you make the beads on your bow. Also what did you use to texturize your fondant.
