My grandson will be having his "kid bd party" soon. If I get more than 3 minutes notice, I was thinking of making him the sleepover cake but with bund beds like he has. I am, however, very much a novice. This is what I was thinking:
His beds are not one directly on top of the other but in a "T" formation. I thought I would make 3 cakes: 2 in a 8.5" X 6.5" pan for the actual beds; 1 in a 16" X 4" loaf pan (the big one). The loaf pan I would cut in half and put on either side of the head of the bottom bunk (I will not attempt to cut book cases out of them) to support the top bunk. Will dowel the top bunk and the supports.
Is this feasible? Any other suggestions? Dare I say, "Doug?"
Another thought was could I use 6 oz. Hershey bars for the support, if I set them in styrofoam to hold them upright? Perhaps 2 on each side.
Anyway, this is only a maybe. Would love to get some input from the experts. TIA.
using the long loaf won't work because of how thick it is.
two halves of it on end would be as wide as top bunk and leave no real room for bottom bunk under it.
after all...top bunk is 8.5 inches long and bunk underneath is 6.5 inches wide leaving only 1 inch at each end to do supports without then sticking out well beyond end of top bunk.
so...
suggestion.... trim down width from 6.5 to 5.5 (will also look more proportional like traditional twin size bunks. this give inch support at each end and then a 1/2 inch of gap on either side of bunk below
then go with the hershey bar idea over foam OR (chocoholic here) stack up a bunch to make the full 1 inch thickness out of chocolate. (melt one or two to use a glue to hold stack together.
also...i'd use at least a double layer cake board under the top bunk cake. (and knowing me, i'd porbably bury a really heavy set of wires in the uprights that where shaped like an upside down U to be extra sure the top was supported well enough -- probably 3 wires...left, middle, right))
Doug -
I knew you would come through (I almost said "thru", then remembered your occupation). I am so glad you did - it never entered my little pea brain to figure out the 8.5 versus 6.5 sizing problem.
Thanks so much for your help. You have the solution for everything. YOU THE MAN!!!
