I see alot of cakes with wire, what type of wire is commonly used and size? Also, is it easy to work with when you use fondant/gumpaste?? Thanks in advance, Veronica
I use a stainless wire from my local Michaels craft store. You can find it in the floral section.
It comes in various sizes depending on your need. I insert thin coffee straws into the cake and then insert the wire into it.
FYI
Pick up a set of wire cutters that you can dedicate only to decorating.
I hope I do not sound dumb on asking about the straws, but does that secure the wire more with the added weight of the fondant? My instructor never taught me anything about wire and straws and so on, so when I came to this site I saw alot of that, and I absolutely love it, I just want to make sure I do it right. I so appreciate all of your help and notes, it truly means alot to me. Thanks so much, u both are gems!!! Sincerely, Veronica
Hold the phone, it's not okay to put metal wire into your cake? I should be using straws? And, by the way, is there any other way to attach to wire to a flat fondant flower than attach a fondant strip on the back? Someone suggested gumpaste, but not sure what that is. Another suggested watered down fondant, but that seems like too much trouble!
So if you use the straws with the wire, do you just push it through the fondant, is it noticeable??? Or does it cover well?? Or is there some other method that is more complex, I am just curious on how it is done, because I want to make sure I do it right. I am doing my daughter's 10th birthday cake, and I just want it to be awesome for her, so I want to make sure it is right. Thanks so much my fellow bakers!!! You are fabulous!!!
