Supplies Needed Question About Wilton Course 1 At Michaels

Hi! First post here, you are all GREAT! My 2 teen children and I will attend our first class tonight at Michaels and I was hoping that someone... anyone could aswer a question.
The paper that was provided when we signed up does not tell what materials are needed for the first class. We own a great deal including the course books, I hate to have to purchase things that I already own. So, if anyone knows what we need, it would be great if you could tell me.
Thanks so much!
Welcome!! For the first night of CI, you will just need a pen and paper. Michael's will provide you a copy of the course book too--may as well take it and use one to take notes in. The first night the instructor will go over some basics of making icing, torting and icing a cake and other things. You will not need anything to bring until the second night and your instructor should let you know what you will need. Good luck and have fun!
Thanks! We are all really excited, even my son (almost 15)!
Maybe someday we will be as good as all of you!

Yes, thats is right. The first class is only a demo. You can buy the basic course 1 kit and that has enough materials to finish your course. There are some additionals kits that you can buy. I guess your teacher will talk about them in the class but you can check them out at wilton's webpage :

There is a 50 and 100 pz tool caddies. It is a good deal to buy one with a 40% coupon.
Just an added note to your original post...
You said you had a lot of stuff already. I did too. They will want you to buy the Student Kit I whether the first or second class. First class is really just a pen and paper. But look on the back (or go on the internet and check) the back of the student kit to see what it contains. I had found I had all my supplies already! So I didn't buy the kit. The only thing I didn't have was the practice board which is also sold seperately if needed. We never even used it in Wilton I. What you will have to buy are all your supplies needed for making the frostings, eventually the clown heads, and I saved cottage cheese containers so that you can bring your different frostings after your first class on. I made a total of 3 cakes and used about 5 containers; bring spoons for mixing, etc.
Once again, first class, pen and paper. Added note: The teacher did have us make a rose the first night using her supplies.
Lots of helpful information, thank you. I am from Athens, Pennsylvania, I will be attending the class in Vestal, NY.
I looked at the kits (thank you for the link) and it appears that there may be only 2 or 3 items that I do not own already. The only snag is that my daughter and I each have most of the items (duplicates), my son does not. I may purchase 1 set (50 pc.) for him, or us a group.
I recently lost my job and thankfully my husband has a great job- this will afford me some time befor searching for new employment to do these awesome things that I have wanted to for so long.
You are all just the best! I really appreciate the help you are giving me.

Moofiebonbon - I was coming here to ask the same exact question! I'm jealous...I won't be taking the class until next month! How cool that your kids are taking the class with you!!
My friend who is taking the class with me wants me to tell her exactly what she'll need so she can budget. I've told her three cakes and icing (plus student kit, obviously). I'll also tell her about the clown heads. How many batches of icing? Do we need colors for tinting? Anything else anyone can think of? We're both SAHM and are so excited for a chance to get out and play with grown-ups. We've been waiting for a new Michaels to open near us and it finally did! I really want her to enjoy the class and not be stressed by unexpected expenses.
I'm glad to know that we can get by without buying the kit. I have everything except one tip and the practice board, so I'll look for those separately.
Thanks CC....I can't wait to post my first cake!
In addition to the kit, you'll also discover that there are other things you'll need to purchase in order to decorate - additional decorating bags, colors to tint your icing, merangue powder (if you're really on a budget, you can get away without it).
I was very surprised when I took my first class that in addition to the $$ I spent on the class and the kit, I would need to spend even more! DH was not too happy about that either.
This is a very fun but very expensive hobby !
first off, the class is not so structured that you couldn't SHARE frosting bags back and forth especially if you're switching colors, etc. That's just a thought.....the other is that if you are going to buy a kit or whatever, make sure you use a Michaels or JoAnns coupon. And if I'm not mistaken, you definately can use a JoAnns coupon AT Michaels, but I don't know if you can use a Michaels coupon AT JoAnns. Hey, anything that saves money!!
Sharing frosting bags for color changes is a good idea. I'll definitely be hanging on to those coupons. I always have a JoAnn's coupon, but Michaels seems to come out every other week or so. I know that some stores will take an ACMoore or Hobby Lobby internet coupon and some won't.
Anyone else remember any unexpected expenses in the class other than the obvious cost of ingredients for cakes and icing?
Thanks a bunch. ![]()
