Okay here is the deal. I am pretty new to fondant, but I have been practicing with Wiltons (Yuck) and doing well. Anyway I am making a cake for someone next week and I need to use fondant but dont want it to be nasty wiltons. I know you can make it homemade but I am not the homemade kinda girl (wish I could). Anyway, the only kind to buy in stores around here is Wilton. I looked into ordering Satin Ice but with shipping its soo expensive! Is there a way to flavor the wilton, or is it just hopeless? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I use Wilton fondant for intricate flowers because it is fast, easy to work with and holds up & dries better, IMHO, of course....but the only kind of fondant I use for actual eating is the MMF recipe here. I know it is a pain and that you don't want to have to make it, trust me.......making fondant sucks icon_sad.gif ~ it is my least favorite thing to do, but if you can't buy the Satin Ice (which I heard tastes good), I think it's the only option. I tried adding a bit of flavoring to the Wilton......then it tasted like vanilla flavored cr*p. icon_lol.gif Sorry to be blunt but I find the Wilton fondant inedible - even with the added flavor.

My advice is to put on a good CD, get out a big airtight container lined with a plastice bag and make about 5 or 6 batches - all white. Then you can have a huge bucket for a fraction of the cost....and really nice looking arms icon_biggrin.gif , since it is quite a workout. Other then that, maybe checking a local cake shop to buy the Satin Ice (if possible) to avoid the shipping fee? But I know not everyone has access to those............ *sigh*

do you have a cake supply place around? They might have Satin Ice there.

Of course I decide to look into this on a Sat evening, when all the baking places are closed! I am going to try those first and then probably just suck it up and order the Satin Ice. Making it would be difficult because I have a very busy 1 year old. But maybe if I have a few hours someday, I will try to make it.

I just ordered SatinIce from Intotheoven and didn't think their shipping was too bad. I ordered 36# and the shipping was less than $20!

Scrappinstephy where in Florida do you live? I bought some Satin Ice but there are only like 3 places in Florida that keep it in stock. One in Orlando, one near West Palm and one in Miami. The place in Orlando had a 5lb. bucket of white for $17.49 or so which isn't bad. I ordered mine over the phone and then had to have somebody that was coming here for Orlando bring it to me because the only two places in Tampa don't sell it. Hope this helps a little.

Are you any where near Pensacola? There's a cake shop there that sells SatinIce.
Otherwise, Into The Oven has 2 lb SatinIce for $8.29 (white) + shipping and they ship pretty quick!
