Oh, my, gosh! I just got an order--well, 2 orders--that is the birthday cake equivalent to a Bridezilla!
This order is actually from my best friend's SIL. I have made cakes for her in the past and made her wedding cake. She has loved every cake I have made and gave me creative control over the cakes and design. BTW--I never charge her my real price. She always gets the family discount as I have been "in the family" for over 25 years. She has recently married into the family.
THe first order is for a baby shower and the invitations are diapers. I was going to suggest a diaper-shaped cake with RI pins. For 11 minutes, she goes over and over the color she wants. Constantly asking how am I going to do the cake. I tell her I have to sit down, design, consult (with CC) and let the cake talk to me. THis entire cake conversation went on for 25 minutes.
Then she calls the next day with her son's 1st BD cake directions. I was going to suggest a 3D cake but then she went on and on dictating how she wanted this and this and this. 11 minutes and 27 seconds on the eyes. 7 and 1/2 minutes on the color. She didn't want the writing on the cake because that would mess up the cake--"How would you do the writing?". Suggested writing on the cake board. She didn't like that--she doesn't want a board. You have to have a board!!! She doesn't want it to show. Oh, my, gosh!!! That conversation on the board was close to 15 minutes. After almost an hour on the cake do's and don't's, the call ended.
Oh, and she kept telling my how her other SIL did a past cake and she wanted it like that--I think next time, I will be booked and other SIL can do the cake. Sorry this is long--I just had to get it off my chest.
I love CC because I can rant and rave--whew--I fell better!
I can't imagine how it takes 11 minutes to describe eyes for a cake. Maybe you could suggest covering the board in fondant so it doesn't look so much like a board, then write on the board. Send her a couple of photos w/boards covered like that.
I think next time I would be booked too.
Ok, now that I'm through giggling.........at your title!!!! Cake nazi!
Is she perhaps nervous? I mean, it sounded like she liked all of your cakes in the past, maybe she thinks you can accomplish anything??
Since you've been in the family for 25 years, ask her to help you out so you all can make it together. Yeah, I know that may be asking for more trouble, but atleast then she could definitely see what a cake needs and why you can't spend 11 min. on eyes!!!
As for next time, I agree with what LisaMS.
Good luck with birthday-zilla and let us know what happens!
Anytime you have a problem with her, just come back and consult with us, CC will always be here for you, lol!!
