Hi.

I just registered my business and have a tax ID but was told from the inspector that I can't have people pick cakes up at my house. If you do they consider it a bakery type business. He would only come inspect if I was selling to markets or stores.

Is there anyone in NYC who has been successful in getting inspected without having a seperate commercial kitchen?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Wow, harlemcakelady, I wish you luck. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue. Did you renovate a portion of your home for the business????

I'll bump.....any New Yorkers out here?????

Thanks Sweetsuccess.

No. I don't have a commercial kitchen.

I called the inspector back for some advice. He told me to contact the Dept. of Health and inquire about a catering business inspection since I would be taking phone orders and making deliveries. Dept. or agriculture and markets
is onyl for selling wholesale/retail to markets and fairs, etc.

I'll let you know what happens.

I am in NYC. You need to talk to Ag & markets - the state (vs. the city - the city won't license a home kitchen). The state dept of ag & markets will license your home, BUT you can't make creams / icings - only baked goods (for some reason unknown to me). Feel free to PM me if you want.
