I have a request for army-themed cupcakes for a little boy. I was thinking camoflauge, but I think that would be tough on cupcakes ?! 
Any other ideas? She did not seem completely opposed to a cupcake cake or a regular cake, but I think she would prefer regular cupcakes.

do camo by making each cupcake a different solid camo color (one color per cupcake -- or at most two)
and then arrange together very tightly in a camo pattern.
will be similar to a cupcake cake (the way they're all smooshed tightly together)
but you will have iced each individually.
can still pipe message on top after they're all smooshed together.
