I have only so far used impression mats on buttercream. I think if you are making the design on the entire fondant covering, you would need to do it after it's on the cake. Otherwise, when you smooth the fondant to the cake, you would mess up the design. If you're only putting a "wrap" of fondant around the cake, then you could make the pattern on the fondant first. I hope this helps.

I have tried this, to make my BIL "house" cake. Its much easier to do bricks after you do the cake! Good Luck!

I just purchased a 14" circular lace mat and a lace wrap mat. I rolled a section first then layed it on the mat and then finished rolling, it came off very easy and looked really pretty. On the molds, I just put a small piece in and work it in the mold and then bend it to release it.

I have a mat and when doing fondant you roll it out then place the mat over it and then use your rolling pin and go over it, make sure you lighty spray your mat with pam so it doesn't stink to the fondant. I have also done this with butter crean by placing the mat right on the cake and using a foam roller gone over it lighty.
