Has any one tried the americolor gold? Does it give you that true metallic gold look?
Can you mix any of the luster dusts with buttercream, if so, is it the same effect as painting or dry brushing?
Does anybody have any suggestions on a filling other than cream cheese or bc that is goes well with red velvet cake?

Hi and welcome back!! As to your question about the Americolor gold. It is not metallic gold.
As for the luster dust, you are really better off to paint it on after the cake is iced. Are you wanting an all-over shiny affect? I have never added the dust to icing. Maybe someone else has and can share their results. When I use luster dust, I mix it with a little vodka and very lightly brush it on. I use it as an accent.
As for the red velvet cake. Have you ever made 7 minute icing? It is soooo good. Very light and fluffy and is very good on red velvet cake.
Thank you all for your suggestions! I was thinking about some unique flavor filling that compliments the red velvet cake. If anyone out there in cc land has painted or brushed luster dust on bc, I would love to know the results and point me in the direction of any pictures posted. Is the americolor gold dull? If I sprinkle pearl or luster dust on it do you think it will give the effect I am looking for?
Wendoger--I will see if I can find you a recipe for it.
yummy----the americolor gold is dull, like antique gold. I think you would get a good affect by painting it with gold luster dust. Just put a little dust in a small bowl and add a few drops of vodka or clear vanilla. When brushing it onto a buttercream cake you have to have a very light touch with the paintbrush or it will mess up your icing. I try to have the luster dust mixture at a thin consistancy with the vodka, that makes it easier to brush on. Also, if it the luster dust starts drying out, just add more vodka.
As for the filling, basically Red Velvet is a very light chocolate cake, so what about a white chocolate filling or maybe something with coconut?

I think I may have just done what you are looking for...
My dump truck has silver luster dust painted on the headlights with a soft bristled paint brush. Worked just fine after the icing crusted- just don't press hard.
Then, on my latest cake (the hexagon princess), I airbrushed the luster dust on each layer. It worked just fine, but it is a looooong process and uses a TON of LD. It goes slowly bc you have to be real careful not to add too much "paint" at one time or it will run. So, you have to keep going over and over and over it. I could have probably added more, but I was tired and it was 3 am.
I'd be happy to share any more info...I love this site and everyone has been so helpful!!
Oh yeah...I just used the 50 butter/50 crisco recipe for these two cakes.
Wendoger,
Here is a link to a recipe for 7 minute Frosting.
