I'm making a guitar cake for a grooms cake and am wondering how I would get this colour. I'm at a complete loss. I haven't done anything like this. I'm thinking of covering with fondant and go from there? How wold I get that faded wood look? Help!

If you have any way to do some airbrushing - that would be your best bet for the two-tone effect.

when i did some bamboo, i got that fade from using brown dye, on a dampened brush (vodka). I used the dye very heavily just around the edge, then rinsed the brush in the cup with the vodka and then using the brush very wet (no more dye) stroked the brush starting at the line i made then inward( or down). seemed to work great! take a look...

I would like to see how your cake comes out. I am doing a guitar cake very similar for my hubby's b-day in a few weeks.

The cakes not due till Sept. But I want to get a couple practice tries in to see how it turns out. I'll try cakebybirdiem's suggestion.. unfortunately I don't have an airbrush... yet! Any other ideas out there?

i've done one before...i first tinted the fondant kind of a light orangey-peachy color then 'painted' on some amber tinted piping gel. then used the airbrush to spray black around the edges.
good luck!

I've just brushed watered down gel colors on BC or Fondant, try a piece of fondant brushed with a different shade of brown with a loose stiffer brush. Look at the bowling cake in my pictures, that was just a first try, watered colors on BC, HTH By looking there does seem to be a woodgrain on the darker color.
