I would like to thank everyone who looked at my turkey cake and had such nice comments. It has been very encouraging! I actually got the idea from a member from "That Cake Board" last year...unfortunately, I do not remember her name....I would truly like to give her credit for her idea. I saw her turkey and copied it.
I used the sports ball pan for the body with a devil's food cake recipe. I covered the cake board in green fondant and then cut out leaves with different types and marbled some, left some solid, and scored veins in all of them. For turkey's neck and face, I went online and found pictures to help with the details of his face. I made a sausage for his neck and inserted a dowel for support before the fondant got hard. ( I used all Wilton ready-made fondant and fooled around with colors until I liked the shades I got) His eyes I used round tips in different sizes and layered them for effect, using piping gel as glue cause it dries clear. His beak is a cone that I rounded on the back so it would fit the contour of his face. His feathers I cut free-hand, some marbled and some solid, then dusted them with petal dust. I then made slits in his rear end to hold the feathers, and used piping gel for his neck feathers and his wings.
what I would do different:
I would spackle the turkey's middle with "cake spackle" to smooth out where the cake halves meet. Toba Garrett has a wonderful recipe for this in her book, The Well Decorated Cake. I think it would have helped the fondant lay smooth along his middle. I did not like he had a divet in his middle!
I would insert florst wire or toothpicks in the tailsfeathers for better support. His feathers drooped a little after a ride to Mother's!
