Hello, first I'd like to say thanks to everybody on this site-I've learned soooo much here icon_smile.gif
Would someone please tell me know how to make (construct) a hat box cake? I am thinking it would be a good cake for a friend's 70th birthday party.
Thanks in advance,
Kathy

I made one that was very simple to construct. I just made a regular 8" round cake (2 layers) for the bottom and a 1 layer 8" cake for the top. I put sugar shells on the bottom cake (since it was supposed to be a box of shells) and propped the "lid" on with some sharpened dowels. You could do the same thing with any shape of cake. The picture is in my photos.

I also saw in one of the decorating magazines (American Cake Decorating) where someone iced the sides of an 8" round cake white and then when the icing crusted, she wrapped a cake band (or she said you could use flexible plastic sheet, parchment paper or wax paper) around the sides and taped it together - leaving about an inch or so from the top uncovered. She then iced the top and the uncovered sides with pink. When that was dry she took off the cake band and it left a 3-D "lid" on top of the box. It was really really cute. Of course, she dressed it up with a big bow on top so it looked like a real hatbox.
