One of my best bud's b/d is next Tuesday. So, while I am on a treasure hunt in Manhattan- I would like to surprise him w/ a cake.

He is a children's clothing designer - and has been for over 30+ years. This guy travels to destinations I only dream off! anyway, I feel pressured b/c he has never seen my work, he is very successful and at times he can be a tough cookie- YIKES! icon_razz.gificon_razz.gif

I was thinking about a suitcase decorated w/ destination labels but, I also would like to add "something" to do w/ fashion???

Please help me sought it out... any ideas would be appreciated as usual!

TIA icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif

ever heard of a sample case or sample trunk?

in clothing industry, when new lines come out, trunks containing samples of the various clothes are sent to prospective buyers at all the major retailers.

so....

could do a trunk that looks open w/ all kinds of kid's clothes spilling out.

or

adapt that to the suitcase -- but have kid's clothes instead of adult.

An easy idea is a bolt of cloth made from a sheet cake with the fabric being MMF or edible images pieced together to make it large enough, scissors made of MMF (you can buy candy molds with all of the sewing utensils), spool of thread, needle, etc.

(grew up near Chicago and Marshall Fields would run trunk sale 2x a year...)

as for suitcase pattern --

sure don't -- as the basic shape is the same as two or even 3 layers of sheet cake stacked

depending upon size needed ---

could bake one sheet and split in half and stack on self (so like a 12x18 become 12x9)

or bake two sheets and stack.

and YIPEE -- the seam between the layers can be the seam between top and bottom of suitcase -- for once it becomes an asset instead of something you struggle to hide!

I've done a couple of suitcase cakes, a 1/2 sheet cake cut in half and stacked is what I used. You don't have to measure anything! And like Doug said, you nead a seam/bump in the middle. They are so much fun to do I can't wait to do another one, you can let your imagination run wild! You can print out edible image destination labels or tickets. Have a look at Katharry's suitcase cakes too. Everything I learned about suitcase cakes I learned from her!

I really like the trunk idea. You could do the destination stickers, and have the clothes spilling out the sides. Can't wait to see it!
