I haven't been decorating for too long so I didn't have a turntable. I got me one of the Wilton Professional Turntables at Michaels today for 50% off and I am SO HAPPY that I got it !!! For those of you that don't have one, I would highly recommend getting one, as it made icing the cake a breeze. How did I ever live without this thing??? And to get it for $30 instead of 60 !!!

I'd still like to know where you are all finding cheaper turn tables to use also. I've heard a few people mention lazy susan turntables for about $10. Where did you find these?

Oh, I think you'll love it once you get to try it out! I already had a cake baked and icing made so I came right home from work and got it out of the box. LOL

The cake I made was a yellow cake, torted, with apricot filling and cream cheese BC icing. I used the 8 inch pans (3" deep) so the cake with the filling came out fairly high. A few days ago I bought a really wide putty scraper (I think it's 4") and that worked really great with the turntable for icing the sides of the cake.

Wow, is this fun!!! Hope you get to use yours soon! And Happy Birthday!

4" is the size I use the most, but you can get a three pack (3 different sizes) at Lowe's for a few dollars.

I meant to say in my last post that I got the 4" putty scraper, but it did come in a three pack with two smaller scrapers. They are a goldish yellow color and they are plastic. Cost me around $2-$3. They are great.

My cheaper lazy susan turntable came from Walmart. It was found in the housewares section.

Wilton makes a plastic turntable that's not raised at all (just about 1/2") and does not tilt or anything. I think it's like 8 bucks. I have that one. I did see some at the cake dec. supply shop that were made of a thicker wood board with laminate (like the counter tops) over it. They had bigger round AND rectangle ones, about 16 bucks average.

Try the metal scrapers - you can run them under super hot water, dry off real quickly and the heat retained will help smooth out icing like a charm!

A little off topic from the turntable, but while we're talking about the scrapers, I was going to get the metal one and didn't see one while I was in Walmart (in a hurry). So I grabbed the plastic ones. It does work well but I am definitely going to get a metal one, too. I know how well the metal spatula works when run under hot water, too. So, thanks for reminding me about getting the metal one!
