I was up till 3:30 a.m. working on this 3D car/spaceship/star wars cake. In the morning I got a call saying that they are postponing the party for two more days b/c of the weather. I usually don't refrigerate my cakes and they are fine for days left out, plus it's not hot out. BUT the fondant is starting to get "melty". It's a mixture of satin ice and MMF. Do you think it will hold up till tommorrow if it's getting "melty"? And is there anything I can do to keep it from melting too much?? Thanks!

I would explain the situation and ask her if she want to take the cake she ordered or pay and order a second one that would be fresh...

This is not YOUR problem and I would hate for you to get nailed for the cake not being as fresh because of their choice to delay. They are probably fine and understand this but some people are terrible. If I were you, I would try to get that cake in THEIR hands as soon as possible... I would hate for something to happen to the cake after it is completed while it is still in your posession. If they are not too far, I would be throwing in free s/h just to be rid of it.

the only thing i can think of is to put it in an airconditioned room...that will keep it dry.

I totally agree with CakeDiva. I'd get that cake delivered as soon as possible. The delay is their call and you ought to be paid and deliver your fresh cake as planned and let them be responsible for it.

The cake is for friends, and I'm actually going to this party tommorrow and was going to bring it with me. My friends insisted that I charge them full price, and I'm charging them $240. It's for 80 ppl and sculpted.

I could maybe plate the cake in the kitchen and peel off the fondant before serving it. I could touch it up with a little extra BC... Do you think the actual cake would TASTE ok after four days? It's the WASC recipe.

I dunno but for the future for those of you who sells your cakes, I would write that into the contract or tell them due to the weather you are not responsible for what condition their cake is.

I agree to get it delivered asap and let her know that the reason for the price is the amount of time that goes into it and that with a call the morning of to delay the cake doesn't help you- it's DONE!!! Not to mention the 3 am thing! UGGGHHHH!!!

Next, please post a picture of it so we can see it. I also think you should take another one right before they cut it so we can all learn from this experience...does it really hold up? where did they store it? etc.

Good Luck!

Well, overnight the fondant dried out again. Weird! I guess because it stopped raining. I was worried that I was going to wake up with all the fondant melted off the cake! icon_eek.gif

My friends totally understand about the cake b/c they here me talking about cakes that I'm doing. I read on another thread that fondant covered cakes can last up to 4 days, so we'll see! I will get to taste it at the party so that will be good. I'll post a follow up and let everyone know how it tasted. I have some pastillage pieces to put on when I get there so I can't post a pic of the finished cake till after.

This darn cake has just been one headache after another!!!! Anyway, thanks for the help last night!

Not really sure if this helps you much or not, but I just finally ate a piece of my course 3 final cake. It was from last Thursday (4 days ago), but I just couldn't bring myself to cut into it, lol. My top tier was covered in MMF and it sliced perfectly and tasted just fine. The cake was very moist still.

Hope this helps a little. icon_smile.gif

If you are really worried about the taste/freshness of the cake maybe you could take along a plain frosted cake that you can cut up and serve?

Just a backup plan if you are really worried.

I completely agree! She needs to pick the cake up as scheduled and if she wants to put it in her fridge for 2 days then thats fine. It will taste just as good.

Well, I ended up bringing the cake to the party with me. I was still working on the darn thing for half the morning! For some reason I just had so much trouble with this cake from start to finish!!

But one good thing was that the cake still tasted good! Everyone loved the taste. I think the fondant helped seal in the flavor and moistness. I tasted it and it definitely was still really moist but with slightly less flavor. Same thing with the buttercream, still tasted good but just a little less flavorful.

Anyway, I'll post a picture when I get them onto the computer. Thanks for all your help everyone!
