My mom is going on a float trip in Missouri for her 58th birthday in 2 weeks. She's going with a bunch from her office, so I want to make her a birthday cake with that theme, to deliver to her work a few days before. Any ideas? I have used MMf a little, but am not very good at modeling yet, so an entire canoe and people is probably out of my skill range and time allowance.

I thought of making a sheet cake with a piping gel river, and some grass and flowers along the sides. But that will be very flat without trees or a boat or SOMETHING! Help! Also, can anyone think of anything witty to write on the cake? I thought about "Another year floats by" but I hate to draw attention to the fact that she's another year older, she can be sensitive about that icon_lol.gif She's not a drinker either, so I can't even scatter beer cans in the canoe icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Here is a pic I found by searching on the word canoe in the gallery. Hopefully this will help spark an idea.

Thanks for the link! I tried searching for canoe, but didn't turn up any matches? I even checked that I was spelling canoe right! I really need to figure out how to use this site correctly...

been thinking on this since 1st saw post....

and the only image that comes to mind is:

canoe upside down in the water.

little heads bobbing in the water

all the sleeping bags, etc. bobbing in the water.

"don't let ol man river or time get you down"

"don't let the river of time get you down"

--------------------

hmmm....i wonder if this image is because on every canoe trip I've been on I've flipped at least once?!

I love it! Funny and creative, and I think she'd get a kick out of it. And I think I could do it! I'll post a pic of whatever I end up with. Thanks for your idea!

I'm still brainstorming- I have this life philosophy about life being a journey down a river, sometimes with boulders in the way and rapids, and sometimes slower currents, and I'm mulling over things like 'going with the flow' and what not. One of those things will pop out at me eventually lol. Exploring new things, new scenery (don't mind me I'm just thinking/brainstorming outloud lol), journey, wherever the current takes you, or more focus on another adventure she's about to embark on.

or find a pic of the missouri river or whatever river her trip will be on and FBCT it? Have you done one before? I did my first and only one in July and it wasnt that hard- it doesnt have to be super detailed-

instead of focussing on another year floating by you could aim for a more active approach- since 'letting another year float by' is as you said not what you want and is more of a passive approach to life anyway- or the river lol and she's 58 and still going on canoe trips- so I would make it more of an active/adventurous message instead. If that makes sense- she seems like an active lady. Mastering the river, concuring the river, that kind of thing, as opposed to just sitting there and drifting lol.

hope that helps and/or makes sense. Good luck. I dont think making a canoe in your piped river would be so hard. After all most of it or half of it is underwater.
I like Doug's idea but I would play DA and wonder if she'd be sensitive about an overturned boat, even with the funny message lol.

Symbolically, in dreams anyway, canoes represent moving ahead with your own power and determination, they also represent serenity, simplicity and independence. Maybe that calls forth ideas for you to describe your mom's personality in some way. Or focus on those aspects of her personality in your design/message

That's too cute icon_lol.gif You could even just buy a plastic canoe from the dollar store and put that upside down, and then just make little fondant heads. Or even Barbie doll heads icon_lol.gif
