is petal dust the same as the pearl/luster dusts you can get on this site?
and is it true that you can mix it with a bit of vodka and "paint" it on the flower petals?
thanks!

Petal dusts have no sparkle or shine to them. They are just very fine powdered food colors. These are used to add detail and depth of color to gumpaste pieces.

Luster/Pearl dusts have sparkle or shine. Some flowers have a natural sparkle (silk white works well for this without changing the color). Pearl dust masks some of the color, but its very nice for decorative touches.

Luster/Pearl dusts are considered non-toxic, but not edible. They will not hurt anyone and the labels will tell you that they are for decorative purposes only. Small amounts on a cake for a customer are not likely to cause any problems at all.

Vodka, Everclear, lemon/almond extracts mixed with the dusts do make great paint. The liquors dry more quickly and the oil in the extracts slow down the drying process. Which one you use will depend on what you need.

Another great paint for flowers or cakes is airbrush color. It makes very vibrant spots, lines, etc. It also doesn't need to be reconstituted like the mixtures do. If you look in my photos, you will see the cake with the band instruments on top. All of the pictures were painted with airbrush color.
