So today is my DH's birthday and instead of making the normal cake decor, I decided to make a cake according to one of his interests,WARHAMMER 40K. He has been playing since he was 12 and he is 35 and still plays. The idea was to have this eagle which is one of the logos on the cake. I tried FBCT. Oh
what a horrible mess. I got it all outlined and put in the freezer but when it came time to putting it on the cake...MADNESS. Here it is:
By the time I got most of it on there, I gave up. The borders are all off and I just couldnt get passed the messed up FBCT. The DH says he loves it but I hate it. I looked at it this morning. That bluish-gray bled onto the cake as well.
think Ill stick with flowers and stuff LOL
If it was your first time using that technique, it's not that bad! Chalk it up to a learning experience and I'm sure you'll have better luck next time.
(I personally can't give you any tips- I've never tried this method!)
If he loved it, then that's all that matters!
Don't be so hard on yourself; it looks great. Your bottom border looks perfect. Your eagle is wonderful too. You were brave enough to go outside of the box, rather than doing the same old thing so pat yourself on the back.
Now, I don't have the first clue what WARHAMMER is, but assuming it's a video game about war and fighting and stuff ... your icing color looks perfect to me, and I see nothing at all wrong with the whole cake. It conveys the message of what I am guessing that game is all about -- I think you did a great job of interpreting it.
Any time we have to create a war/fighting theme on a cake, we are going against the grain of what a cake is all about (and why we are so drawn to create them) -- sweetness and light, pretty, fun, celebration, etc.
It's hard to integrate such diametrically opposed concepts on one cake. I think you did a great job. I'm not surprised at all that your husband loves it.
A few tips (not that I'm an expert at this, but I've done a few FBCT recently). First, that was a tough design to do as a FBCT - it might have been easier to do as a gel transfer and fill in. BUT, if you wanted to do it that way, with all of the little crevices, etc., it would have been easier to transfer if you did a coat around of the base icing coat (sort of making a medallion or circle around the entire design, filling in between the wings, etc.)
Keep it up! It was a great first attempt. And that is the wonderful thing about husbands (at least good ones) - no matter how many faults we find, all they see are the high points of what we do. EVERYTHING I do my fiance loves and things is the best thing he has ever seen. And I've had some pretty horrible disasters recently, and he thinks they are all just fabulous. He isn't just saying that - he honestly believes it. So, I'm sure your husband really did love the cake and think it was fabulous, even if it wasn't as good as you wanted it to be. I think we are all disappointed when the cakes don't meet our expectations . . . the key is that the people we are making it for are happy. I think we are always much tougher to please.
Welp, since I haven't been brave enough to try FBCT yet, I have no advice and no room to critique!! BUUUUUT...good for you for (like someone else said) thinking outside the box! I think I get all caught up in what's been done before rather than what hasn't been.
You done good and your DH loved it...wasn't THAT the point?!?!? Don't be so hard on yourself!
Those are really cool borders! I really like the top border, I may use that in the future. next time, maybe start it in the back so you can't see it. Every cake has a back!
Landa,
I haven't made a FBCT, but I did make a chocolate transfer and some colorflow, and the techniques are similar...
It looks to me as if your buttercream was too stiff. That's why it didn't flow smoothly into the spaces and looks a bit rough. (The roughness suits the world where Warhammer is played, BTW.) ![]()
I have to agree with TKeys, it is a tough design, but it might have been easier to do a medallion type of thing (with some background icing). Also I am not sure if your FBCT stuck to the paper, but i really find that parchment (I buy the silicone treated kind by wilton) they really just peel right off of the paper. I cant really tell what happened from your photos, but it appears that your icing might have been a little thick and maybe not into all of the crevices. Did you try to fix the transfer by filling it in after it was on the cake? It almost appears as if you have it on upside down. I hope I am being helpful...I know what it is like trying something for the first time and not having it go as planned. I alway seem to need to do things at least once before I really get the idea. Your overall design looks nice, good job with the rope borders. I hope you give it another try! Good luck.
that cake looks good! my bf is REALLLLY REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY into warhammer 40k and said so himself.. i imagine i might have to make one of the sort for his birthday also lol
