To start, I must say that I love rain and can't stand those bright sunny days. I came home from work on Friday morning and it's raining its butt off from Tropical Storm Ernesto and I'm loving it. I've got 2 cakes and some cookies to do so I get started. I raise the blinds in the kitchen window so I can watch the rain (it's the only time they ever get opened) and get to decorating. Right about the time I'm finishing up the last cake, the lights begin to flicker, no biggie. Then around noon the power is out completely. Luckily I'm able to finish my cake and head out to deliver it.
The disasterous part is that the power company says that the power should be restored by 4:30pm, that's great because I have a cake to do for Saturday that I haven't baked yet. So, I go take a nap and DH wakes me at 8pm.... still no power. I had to pack up everything and head to my mom's to bake my cakes. Surely the power will be back by morning and I can make icing to decorate with, I don't want to pack up my whole kitchen worth of decoating supplies and haul to mom's for one small cake..... 7am Sat, no power, UGH!!! Back to mom's to shower at least (we're on a well) and I call my customer about possibly my delivering her cake at a later time than she had planned to pick up. What a stroke of luck, the party isn't until sunday afternoon and she was just going to pick it up a day early for convenience. OH HAPPY MOMENT ![]()
So, DH and I spend the day doing errands and cruising around looking at the mess left by the storm. Had dinner with the in-laws and called our house at 7pm, the answering maching didn't pick up..... still no power. Geez! Hung around a little longer and decided to head home around 9pm, called the ans machine again to see..... it picked up!!!! WOOHOO, electricity!!!! So, my cake will get done this morning and my weekend will be spared. I lucked out that this weekend wasn't a busy one. I can't imagine the stress if I had a wedding cake yesterday.
Breathing a sigh of relief!
wow no kidding! That was a stroke of luck!
Glad nothing disastrous happend for you!
When I lived further out on the coast here, power outages are the norm in the winter- trees blow down constantly onto power lines and since i t's out n the bush, and not on a fancy schmancy computerized system where they can track exactly where the line broke, it takes a while- power outages can last for few days- and that stinks but everyone who lives there is used to them
But I do remember the last power outage before I moved away from there- Christmas Day. We had decided to put the turkey in the oven early- have an early dinner- I cant remember why now but hey it worked in our favour lol. When the power went out we were just putting everything on the table. I can imagine the poor rest of the folks who had to finish cooking their turkeys on the barbeque lol
Wow! What a story.
I have always wondered how cake decorators and bakeries cope with power outages.
Worse yet, I still wonder what happens when you have to deal with the rolling blackouts so many states get in the summer.
Do they just lose the cakes they have in the oven?
Glad you got your cake done, and all is well now! ![]()
See the story on my cheeseburger cake, in my pix.
