This was from last month, made me realize that I'm not ready to start a business.
My older brother's girlfriend had a co-worker order a cake from me. We got the details in order and I practiced, fretted and started losing sleep trying to figure out how I was going to make this cake since I had never done anything like it before. I then talked to my younger brother who said he gave my phone number to his girlfriends mom and she wanted me to make a cake too. She wants her order done the same week as the other woman. Now I know a lot of you do this on a regular basis, but I am still EXTREMELY new to decorating cakes and have 3 children, one of them a nursing baby. I said sure, and immediately started losing sleep over this one too. I finally came up with a plan, on tues. I made some of the frosting and roses and stuck it in the fridge. On weds. I made my yellow cake with chocolate frosting and about 20 cupcakes. On Thurs. I made my chocolate cake with vanilla bc and another 20 cupcakes. Those took care of ONE of the cake orders-she had about 75 people coming to the party. By Fri. morning I was starting to feel a little punchy. I made my final cake, forgot that if I moved the cakes in the oven that the tin foil around the base of my spring form pan would tear. Batter leaked and caught fire. My 2 yr old was watching on the sidelines saying, 'Look mommy! Fire!' The cake was ok and the day proceeded. Husband and wife came to get the cakes and cupcakes and dropped one of the bags holding the cupcake boxes. I laughed. It was either that or cry! They were ok, just a little squished. That evening as I am preparing my supplies for the last cake, we realize that it is too hot in the baby's room. We can a) let her sleep with her sisters for the VERY first time, or b) put in the AC and everyone get a peaceful night of sleep. We went with b), I did not get to start decorating the cake until after 9 pmThe whole time I was decorating I was thinking, 'I hate this, I will never do it again.' I didn't get out of the kitchen until 12:30am, my legs were killing me, my back was killing me, and I was frazzled. Both women wanted to give my phone number out to other people but I said please don't.
It was a happy ending though, everyone was very happy with their cakes, I got rave reviews but wow, I really like the stress-free, make just for family and close friends icon_smile.gif Thanks for reading!

Wow....you handled it wonderfully! I have had 4:30 am nights (mornings) lately and I am thinking the same thing...please let this end!!!! lol...
I do enjoy the cakes...but not with a nursing baby ...you are already stessed enough. I nursed all of mine...and that alone is enough to keep your attantion...no need to add any extra "TO~DO's" to your list of mommy duties!!!

There are cakes that just go together so easily and then there are the cakes that make us question why we do this. I am pretty new to cake decorating, I caught the bug a year ago. I have sold several cakes and it seems that you go along decorating and everything is ok. Then you get that order that right from the beginning you know is going to be....well, lets just say not easy. It does get better, don't give up if it is something you are passionate about. I have been baking/cooking since I can remember and some days it is good and some days it dog food.

I have five kids, my oldest is 7, and two sets of twins 4 and 5. So, I can understand how crazy things can get at times. It sounds like you know how to plan things out, it does get easier as you go.

I tell ya, women are amazing creatures. I salute you and every other woman out there who has the strength to raise more then one kid at a time. I have none and I can only imagine the work, and at the same time, the joy of raising so many tykes.

((())) here's a hug for you. I'm glad everything worked out for you. Some cakes are as easy as can be and there are cakes that don't seem to fall into place for a while.

It won't be like this forever, so to all the moms with little babys, enjoy your babies, they don't stay little forever. My oldest turned 38 yesterday and my baby turned 30 two weeks ago. And I could swear they were little yesterday.

Brickflor, I understand how hard it is to decorate and keep your sanity whilst dealing with your family obligations. icon_cry.gif

But you did get through this successfully and you will be able to do it again. icon_biggrin.gif

I also am feeding my DD 11 months, and it is getting really hard as she is at the stage she wants to walk but cant do it by herself. icon_mad.gif

I have just decided that anything more than 4 hours sleep is over rated and really not required. icon_evil.gificon_evil.gif

The other thing that keeps me going is the fact that they will get bigger, they will become more independant icon_biggrin.gif ............ which is good for me!!

Because whilst I love to bake and decorate, I HATE tapedshut.gif the clean up........... solution to this problem: Pay slave icon_redface.gif wages to the children and they get the added bonus of licking all the bowls. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

lol-It's funny how things can always look better in the morning! When I got up the next day, the womans husband was supposed to come and pick up the cake (just not possible for me to make deliveries) and after he left, the day got brighter. By the end of the night I was sketching out my next cake idea!
