I am known as the resident cake maker at my work because I bring in cakes all the time and everyone loves them. Well, the store I work at just moved and we're opening a huge store so I made a cake for the occasion and to cheer everyone up because stocking the store is really hard work.

Anyway, my boss's daughter's birthday is next week and that's when the new store is opening so she won't have time to make her a cake so she asked me to do it and she's going to pay me. I'm freaking out! She said she doesn't need anything fancy, but I think a plain looking cake like what she said will suck, so I've come up with an idea that I think will work.

I have the Wilton mini egg pan and I am going to try to make them into balloons. Now the problem is that I want the balloons to overlap so I'll have to cut them or something to fit together (does that make sense?) Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I might do this? My last resort will be to just eyeball it and cut and hope I don't ruin it, but I was hoping someone here would come up with a brilliant idea! Thanks!

Hi acgref,

I have a balloon cake I need to do for the 24 September. The girls mother asked for a bunch of balloons and it has to be five (her age). I was freaking out trying to think of how I was going to do this.

The first cake I tried was 5 round flat cakes, I wanted to try the 3D look with the sports ball but didnt want to be left with heaps of cake so I trailed with the mini ball pan.

Here are both photos (ribbons will be added to the real cake).. to get them to fit together trace the 5 shapes in tracing paper, put them together (overlapped) how you want them to sit and then mark the bits you need to cut out.

For the 3d pans I just kind of guessed but the VERY important thing is to cut out on an angle as the bottom of the balloon needs to sit flush against the next one. The first time I tried this cut straight down and was left with big gaps. (gosh I hope that made sense!). I did also try with the mini egg but it didn't seem to work too well.

Nefgaby told me about making the pattern and it saved my life! If you dont understand my instructions let me know icon_smile.gif

Good luck
