I want to make a 3D frog cake for a friend for his birthday. I'm having trouble figuring out the construction of the cake. I thought that maybe I could bake a heart shaped cake and use that as the base for the frog's legs and bake a bowl cake for the head and body of the frog. But I guess I'm having a hard time picturing how it would look and if the heart shape cake underneath would look like the legs of the frog. Any ideas or other suggestions? I could use them ASAP. Thanks.

I JUST did a Frog Cake last week! He turned out SOOO cute. I will post some pics in my gallery just as soon as I finish this.

I used as 9in round for the base. Notched the edge of it and turned it into a lilly pad. I baked his body in my smallest Pyrex bowl and then used Twinkies for the legs and eyes (4 Twinkies total). 1 for each back leg and half a Twinkie for the front legs and about a fourth to a third for the eyes.

Very easy and everyone LOVED him. Probably my favorite cake I have done so far.

Okay I set down with pencil and paper and kept drawing until I came up with something that looks like a frog using the heart pan and a bowl. I used 2 hearts and 1 bowl.
First lay down one of the hearts, with the point pointing up. Use your bowl to cut the top point off the heart. Put the point in the bottom opening of the heart and trim to fit. Fit the bowl shape on top for the head. Cut the second heart in half and put the halves on either side with the points down, this makes the back legs. Frost the cake and figure pipe the front legs and all the feet. Put the face on the head.

Any way that is how I would make one useing those shapes. You can look in my photos for a couple of frog cakes that I have made.

Thanks Hockeygirl658. The frog looks really neat and really easy to do.

Thanks Froggyjustjumpin for the suggestion, but I found the instructions a little confusion. Maybe I would understand better if I saw it.

The cakes doesn't necessary need to be baked with a heart shaped cake and bowl cake. I just thought that I might be able to achieve the look that I wanted with it. I know I could bake the cake in a bowl to represent the head, but I'm just trying to figure out what I could do about the legs and body. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've done two different styles of frog cakes. I did a bullfrog that you can find here. http://cakesbycarla.com/bubba.jpg And I did a red eyed tree frog that you can find here. http://cakesbycarla.com/frogfrontsmall.jpg
If either of these is what you're looking for, I would be happy to try to give you some advice.

I can't figure out how to make the links clickable. Sorry.[/img]

I guess another idea I have is to bake the dome cake for the head and body and to bake the heart or a round cake and cut it in half and lay a half on each side of the dome cake to represent the back legs. Then I would just have to do something about the front legs. How does this sound?

wonder mold works even better for body.

use rice crispies for legs and head/mouth. (hey, if they're good enough for Duff...)

LOL. Funny that you mentioned the Rice Krispie treats. I just thought of it right after I posted my last post. I have a box of RK but I need to check to make sure it's not stale. I hope it would be easy to cover the treats with MMF.

Another quick question. Do the treats need to be molded right away, or can you wait for them to cool in the pan?

When I have molded RK Treats before I found that I had to let them cool because they were too hot to handle! icon_eek.gif Also, if they are on the too warm side they don't like to stay put. The marshmallow is too soft. I waited about 30-45 minutes before I could do anything with them.

I've used the 3-d bear and made a frog. I'll see if I can find the picture of it - it turned out really cute.

How funny, I'm working on a frog tonight! Just a little cake for my son's preschool so I'm doing a 8-inch round with two small 2-inch round eyes on top, plus cutout legs on the bottom. But you can do a cute 3D frog with the standup teddy bear pan. Search "frog" on wilton under recipes and projects. Two or three cute ideas come up. Good luck!

I just spray my hands with pam and dive right into the rk treats while they're still hot because then you can just form them to the perfect shape and the non stick spray protects your hands from all of the heat. As for covering them with fondant........make sure you cover them liberally with bc or else the pock marks in the rk treats will show through your bc..........I learned this the hard way LOL It helps to chill them after frosting in the fridge a while before applying the fondant too.

Thanks for all the tips. I've already made the frog cake and it's posted in my photo album. I think it turned out okay, though I can't help but think that I was missing something.
