I hope this hasn't been asked and answered many times but I am considering a wedding cake with somewhat tall tiers. I want to use 14, 12, 10 & 8 diameter round cakes, 2 layers each 3 inches tall. I believe the most prudent course of action would be to insert cardboard between each layer. Has anybody done this or can anybody offer input? Many thanks.

I would think you'd be okay with just using carboards between each tier. I just did a topsy turvy with three layers, each 2 in high and it was fine like that. Also, when I have tall tiers I use a sharpened cental dowel to keep the cake(s) from sliding. I actually used three central dowels on my last cake, two sharp dowels into the bottom two cakes and one that pierced the middle tier's board and then I stuck the top tier(dummy tier) on top of that. Since your cake is so big you may need to stagger the dowels like I did.

Good luck! Post pics! Is it going to be fondant or BC?

Thanks a million for your replies. I don't usually make my tiers more than about 3-4 inches thick so this one makes me a little nervous. The staggered dowels sound like a great idea (that just didn't occur to me). This bride is leaning toward bc but I think there's nothing like MMF. Hopefully she decides soon for a 9/15 wedding. Thanks again!

If you do not use cardboard between your tiers then how do you support the tiers of cake as you stack them?

For the original question, I would not worry about cardboard between your layers but I would Definitely put cardboard/plates with dowels/pillars between each tier. You need something to support those top tiers.

I wrote tier instead of layer... My bad

There is a cardboard round under each tier but bit in the middle of each layer .. example... my tier is 6 inches tall.. there is no cardboard in the middle of that layer... there is one under it... maybe I wasn't clear... I understood her question as if your tier was over 4 inches tall .. you needed an additional cardboard in between to supoort it....
