How did you guys got so talented in cake decorating?????
Looking at the galeries I saw wonderfull cakes that I will never be able to make...
I took the first wilton class and tried some cakes at home ( with fondant and frosting)But they all came up a disaster.....
Are you guys really talented or it took you a lot of classes and a lot of ugly cakes to get where you are today??
I love cake decorating, I just wish they come up nice...The good thing is that they taste good ( and my hubbie said that taste is what matters) but how you eat something that looks terrible?????

Practice Practice Practice and then more of the same.

Hate to say it but just doing it is the best teacher.

I don't even come close to the talent displayed on this site but to even get to the point that I am............PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

As long as hubby likes the taste of your cakes, he can eat the practice ones!

Dear Denise,
To some cake decorating is a natural talent, but it is not one that cannot be learned with time and practice. If you love cake decorating that much, don't give up! icon_wink.gif Just keep doing what you love and trying new things. The best advice I can give is to get good at one thing at a time so that it builds confidence and then venture on to the next. You will find that over time your skills will improve. Don't give up on your passion! Especially since you have a little one on the way; you will have many more cakes to get to experiment with! thumbs_up.gif

I have to agree also, by doing more you learn more. I have to say honestly speaking I didn't take classes I looked at pictures and figured it out from there. Just keep on practicing, if they are tasting great soon enough the looks will follow

I agree. Practice, practice, practice. I looked at your pictures and I don't think your cakes are a disaster at all. I think they look nice. Keep it up. Take classes when the opportunities come up and when asked to bring food anywhere, take cake. Before you know it you'll be a pro.

My cakes are still in the ugly stage, like anything in life it gets better with practice. Any way that is what I keep telling myself. If they taste good you've won 1/2 the battle.

I have never taken a class, and my cakes may not be at the level as many other CC's, but I love it, and I had to start somewhere (character cakes for my kid's birthdays). This year I have just started on "other" cakes and am quite proud of how I've grown in caking!

It takes love, time and practice!

I have to agree with everyone. PRACTICE!!! My cakes have improved since I first started about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I try to make 3-4 cakes a month at least. There are great turorials on this site that you can learn from. Take all the classes you can and the rest is trial and error. The people on this site have always been eager to help.....just ask questions if you are not sure about something. There is such a vast amount of talent and knowledge to learn from the people on this site.

I didn't know I had cake decorating skills until I took Wilton's 3 courses. I've always known how to draw etc...those are the easier cakes. The sculpting, by watching and studying...and also some reading. Then most importantly...get your elbows floured up and practice. The more you do it, the better you get and will start putting your spin on things. I'm inspired by the smallest of things, Everything is art to me, that's just how I see it, so the pattern on a paper towel will inspire a design. Get you some books or videos (I'm more of a visual person...I need to see you do it to catch on) But the classes are fun...take more if you can. And just relax with it, have fun and explore. Some of the greatest were taught. (kinda like Dancing with the Stars icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif )
Oh by the way....I'm still learning and I'm by far no expert. Just wanted to encourage you

I'm just started making cakes in February so I have alooooot to learn, but I've been making cookies for many years and my best advice is to just keep practicing. As they say: practice makes perfect.

I 100% agree with the rest, practice, practice and then, do it again! My cakes have come along, and as "good" as I am right now, I cannot compare with most of the gals on here! But, I get so many ideas and answers to my questions from here, I can't stop coming, lol. icon_smile.gif Just keep on going, u'll get to where u wanna go! Good luck! icon_wink.gif

I totally agree....it does take practice. I have never taken any classes. I am self taught and have learned about everything I know from this website. I still have a long way to go also but I am getting more confident with each cake. I just started doing cakes in February and I am hooked!!!! I love to challenge myself and I think that is what you have to do. Everytime you make a new cake...challenge yourself with a new technique!!! thumbs_up.gif

I think it doesn't matter what stage you are in...there is always something to learn. Enjoy the outcome of each cake, chances are there is something you can be pleased about or something "new" you learned! The greatest moment comes when you look at one of your finished cakes, and you truly feel like you impress yourself. I know it sounds silly but, for years people have commented on my cakes (and I certainly am not even close to being an expert or comparable to some ladies here) and it always made me feel good. But, it wasn't until I actually heard myself say "I can't believe I did that" that I felt really good. ~Though a warning: There are days that I think "what was I THINKING I can't do this!" LOL
