Powdered sugar is the only thing I've noticed the difference in myself.
I use generic vegetable oil and powdered sugar... same with flour/sugar.
No difference, as far as I'm concerned!!! And I'm a name-brand kind of gal usually...I'd rather eat good food than save a buck, so if that gives my opinion more impact, then HURRAH! ![]()
** ALTHOUGH, I did think of something: generic SHORTENING IS NOT EQUAL! I definitely stick to Crisco now.
I haven't noticed a difference in much of anything......I'd be interested to know what difference people find in confectioners sugar, though. I usually buy CH Powered sugar but have bought the store brand and don't really notice a difference. The one thing I've heard does make a difference is the quality of vanilla purchased. I've never bought expensive vanilla but may soon as I've heard it is much better than store bought imitation stuff.
I've heard that store brands are usually made by name brand companies and package them differently. That way, stores can sell cheaper versions and the companies still make money.
For instance, when my kids were younger, I looked closely at the label of a target brand infant soy brand formula, and noticed that the address info on that label was the same as a name brand's address info.
Interesting, huh?
I'm not saying this is always the case, but in some instances, I think this is true.

i think you're right...i've heard the same thing..and it makes total sense
definitely Gold Medal. I have had good store brands though. But some have been saltier and just off. So there are only certain store brands I would buy. I typically use unbleached flour. Whole foods market has a good bulk unbleached flour and their store brand as well. Sav-A-Center has good store brand too.
i buy the 7pound bag of powdered sugar and it is fine. However, I had some "throw down" boxes of cake mix--just for my usage for fast cupcakes for son's preschool or whatnot. A friend called in a panic at Midnight, so I baked her kiddos' b-day cake using WalMart's Great Value mix--cakes were so small, I had to use another box to give it some height. I don't think all cake mixes are the same.
