hi sweet peopleicon_surprised.gif)

Is it better to just buy all those delicate gumpaste, fondant and royal icing flowers instead of making it your own? Coz you know when you made yourself, you still have to buy all those tools and equipments plus the ingredients...

I make my own MMF, RI and Buttercream and cake (I sometimes use mix). Ingredients as usually cheap compared to how much you pay
for those ready made icings. Unless it is something I cannot make, then I buy it.

I make everything at home (gumpaste, fondant, royal icing decorations). But I also have to say that I don't do this full scale!!! Plus I have all the time in the world because I don't have a full time job, so I don't have any excuse.

I make my own fondant and flowers. The flowers and modelling is the fun part.

I make my own....everything. There's something satisfying about doing it all. Besides...my luck is that the gumpaste would break in shipping!

I used a couple hooby store 40% off coupons to built up my flower making supplies. Michael's has a large kit of tools reg. price $19.99 so you can get it for @ $12.00 and there are alot of cutter, etc...

The one that comes with course 3 ( I think ) has a neat pink set to make fondant flowers... those are fun. The really involved ones are still a bit intimidating. I also picked up a second hand pasta machine ( hadn crank ) to roll the fondant thin..... I could make flowers and watch TV icon_lol.gif all night

Hey that's great idea for the fondant--do you just use it like you would with pasta? I may have to try that in the future. ahhh the things you learn on this site! icon_biggrin.gif

considering:
a) my skill level w/ gumpaste and flowers -- low
b) my patience level w/ gumpaste and flowers -- lower yet
c) the amount of time I have to devote to making them --even lower yet
d) the reasonable cost and beauty of premade ones -- high

for now --> I prefer to buy the premade ones.

it depends..in the beginning it's so fun to say you know how and yayyy!! you can do it...(well, that's how i felt) but then when i have 5...6+ cakes per WEEK...plus work, plus school...i really don't have the time to make my own, plus, if i'm going to pay myself at least what i make at work then it's just cheaper to buy them....

so in the beginning, i'll be honest, i made all my flowers and stuff...and occasionally, if i only need 2 or 3, i'll make them...but if i need a whole bunch and different kinds, and multiple orders, i look at it from a business perspective...and the primary point of a business is to make a profit...so...i'm buying most of the large flowers/difficult flowers

It's good to know that you are able to make but realistically

labor (i.e how many are u able 2 produce within x amt of time)
+ cost of materials
+ storage
_____________
it's cheaper /cost effective to buy them! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gificon_cool.gif

i make my own things too. gumpaste and flowers. i love to make them. if you dont like to make them then go ahead and buy them. i buy my fondant. it works out better for me to buy it and i prefer it actually to home made stuff.
