Cakes Smelling Like Plastic Wrap

hey ladies, i have baked and wraped cakes to be frozen, but i have a question, while wrapping the cake, i could smell the wrap as it got hot. does this smell go into the cake while it is cooling in the freezer, i am scared to death that when i take the cake out to be decorated, it will have the taste of the wrap, but i will have not way of testing it to tell, i used the plastic wrap from wal-mart, (their brand) thank you

Hi,

Not sure if I understood you correctly, you are wrapping the cakes hot? In my experience your cakes should be completely cool before you wrap them, also place them (individually) on a cake board to absorb some of the moisture, otherwise you will have a soggy cake.

Not to mention the bacteria growth that occurs when you wrap a hot cake...definitely a No-No!! lol icon_biggrin.gif

I've wrapped cakes that are not COMPLETELY cool but slightly warm and immediately pop them in the freezer. I've never had a problem with anything smelling like the plastic wrap.

But I agree with the previous posters that you probably should wait for the cakes to pretty much cool completely before you wrap them.

never had a cake taste like the plastic wrap. I wrap after turning out of pan, still warm and freeze. Never had a problem. Although I don't use plastic wrap from Wal Mart.

There are several threads on here about wrapping cakes warm, people have several diffrent opinions.
They also have several links to professional opinons for and against. Read them, make an informed decision to wrap or not.

thank you ladies for your help, now i am confused, i did a search on freezing cakes and got several different responses, the were from wrapping the cakes after only cooling in pan for 10 minutes, to let completely cool before wrapping. i have used 15 cakes mixes, eggs and oil and have 3 cakes in my freezer and i am afraid to use any of them.
i probably will stay up all night and bake right before i need them and that way i know they will be ok, thank you all for your information and help, i is greatly appreciated.

POPCORN - don't give up on freezing! It really is so convenient. I would never make/decorate any cakes because I never have enough time to bake and decorate all in one day.

I would maybe experiment and see what works best for you and I know food safety regulations and all of that, etc. but if you put your cakes directly in the freezer after you wrapped them, I don't think anything would have "spoiled". But from here on out, I just wouldn't wrap hot.

Taste test one of the smaller cakes. If it tastes funky, bake all new cakes. You could also taste test from the bottom, and no one will now that you tried it. If it's good use it, or rebake that size.
