Ok, time to get serious about making the cake for my moms big 50 bash. The party is October 21st and I want to know:
1) How far in advance can I make the MMF leaves to cover the cake?
2) I am going to color the MMF as well as paint the leaves with color. Is it best to thin the color with vodka or an extract?
3) I want to use luster dusts as well . . . do you paint the luster dusts on? Or just brush them on dry?
4) If I paint the luster dusts on, do you do that ahead of time or when you are putting them on the cake?
5) Insted of candles, I want to make a 50 out glass beads to put on the cake, any suggestions?

Thanks! Between menu planning and such I want to get a jump on the cake ASAP.

i will try to answer some of your questions.

1.) i know nothing about the mmf. i only made it one time and didnt store it so i cant answer that one.

2.)you can use either one of the extract of the vodka..they will both evaporate fast and not damage the fondant. just use a clear one.

3.) the lustre dust depends on what you want to achieve. for me brushing them on dry works best. i dont have any luck with any sort of painting work. not in me i guess.

4.) you can make the 50.. buy some jewelry stuff. like wire and beads and go to town. that will be pretty. the bead options are incredible.

I am almost positive mmf last a long time. I think there was a thread on it. I'll look for it.

I can't find it, but I know it last a really long time as long as you store it in an air tight container. I wrap it in plastic wrap first, then put in a container. HTH, Kristen

don't use a lot of MMF either, so can't help on that one.

Brushing your dust gives a more textured appearance to things, like leaves and works really well. Painting is good for many areas, but I mostly do that on things like silver on a purse, etc.

If you want to make the top out of glass beads, you could cut a piece in the shape with fondant, then let that dry and attach them with royal, but I would go for edible if you're not set on the glass. Just make the shape, let it dry, then you can roll out a thin piece of fondant and cut out small circles, depending on how big you want them. Roll them into balls, put in a small ziploc with dust, like pearl, silver or gold, and shake. This will give you beads or pearls taht look real but are edible. I did about 100 miniature ones on a tiara and earrings to go with a cake alst spring- my 8 year old DD helped roll all of them, and I had to use tweezers they wer so small! Here is a pic to give you the idea.

I would use vodka for the painting since it is so much cheaper than buying extract. I bought a big bottle at Meijers for 9.00. You can drink it too if you get really frustrated! icon_lol.gif

LOL! I always use vodka or Everclear, since it's 180 proof. It dries so fast you have to really work fast, but it's great! Never drink it, but it's been tempting a few times....
