Contemporary Basket Weave Help Please
Decorating By kidscakelady Updated 1 Sep 2006 , 6:21pm by kidscakelady
I just completed a cake for a dinner party that I am having this evening. My chocolate cakes are always a big hit and thought it would be nice to make it look a little different than usual... I tried the contemporary basket weave from the articles. What did I do wrong?? It just doesn't look right. Any insights would be great. Thanks!
I think it looks yummy!
Part of the effect of the contemporary basketweave is the play between light and shadow, since the impressions have straight edges and are indented. On a dark frosting, you won't get that light/shadow look, but it still looks very impressive!
Laura.
Thanks for the input. The comment about the dark frosting not showing the light/shadow look makes sense. Thanks. I'll have to try it again with a light frosting to see the difference. I think that it added "something" to my normal flat frosting.
As for the recipes... the cake is actually a box mix. (yes, I have to admit that I like it much better than any of the scratch recipes I have made over the years) Betty Crocker Triple Chocolate Fudge. THe frosting is as follows:
2c. butter softened
2 tsp. pure vanilla
1c. dark chocolate coco powder
hershey's special dark chocolate syrup- I use about 1/4 c. (I think- I don't measure it- I use it to thin the icing instead of milk)
2 lb conf. sugar
I really can't give an exact amount on the syrup- I just use enough to thin out the icing to the consistency that I want.
Everyone in the family- and many friends, teachers, etc. have all raved about it so I continue to make it this way.
Happy Frosting!!!
Your cake is beautiful! I've been experimenting with some chocolate icings and haven't found one I love yet. I think I'll try yours next. I've never seen Hershey's Special Dark syrup. Is there some where special you get it? Also, do you prefer a specific brand of cocoa powder. Thanks!
The only place I have been able to find the special dark syrup is at the Big Y food market. None of the other grocery stores around me (upstate Ny right on the Mass border) carry it so when I find it, I stock up. As far as the cocoa- my SIL gets it from her wholesaler for me and the brand changes depending upon availability-Personally, I prefer Valrhona but I take whatever she can get as long as it is at least a minimum of 20% cocoa. I have used a lot of different brands and somehow, no one seems to ever notice the difference except me (a self-proclaimed chocoholic-runs in the family!)
