I have been asked about becoming a Wilton Instructor.
Are there any current or former Wilton instructors out there who can answer the following questions for me?
1. How time consuming is it?
2. Do/Did you find it to be a worthwhile experience?
3. Is/Was the pay worth it?
4. Did you have to pay "fees" to get the position?
5. What tips do you recommend for being a good instructor?
To answer your questions. #1 There is alot of preparation, studying their teaching format, paperwork etc. Your first class will require that you bring your mixer and make icing, you will need to bring a cake. You will make thin, medium and stiff consistency so that the students know what it should look like. You will show them how to ice a cake. You will demonstrate a border and flowers. The first class you do all the work. The remaining classes the students will bring their cakes and icing and you will use theirs to demonstrate different techniques. This is so you can tell if they got their icings right. You have 2 hours to complete the lesson plan which Wilton gives you. Be careful not to let them get you too far off track, it will cost you time. #2.If you like people and decorating it is a worthwhile experience. #3.Not really. You will end up having to buy some things. It is doubtful you will have every thing you need to start. They do give you a 40% discount for being an instructor. You are paid for a certain amount of students. Wilton has a pay scale. The minimum is 4 students for a class. If you teach at Hobby Lobby, you will be sent a 1099 at the end of the year. You have to consider your gas, and time. You will be required to keep records and submit paperwork after each Course. If you teach at Michaels you are an employee. Most of the time you will work when they want you to work. They may require that you do demos, which you will get paid for. You will need to make a dummy cake for a display to help you get students, Wilton will give you materials to help you advertise. The more students you have the more you make. I think the maximum per class is 15. I had to drive 55 miles one way, so I really did not come out ahead. #4. There are no fees. You may have to submit some of your photos and answer a questionaire about your decorating experience.Other then supplies you may need to purchase to do your classes.#5Organization,patience and good attitude. Good Luck.
