Oh My Gawd... I Never Realized How Hard It Was To...
Decorating By disp4so Updated 11 Jul 2007 , 5:02pm by miriel
make a monogram out of gumpaste.. I am trying to make a cursive K like the one in the picture below.. but it just does not seem to turn out right..
I made one that is too big and the other too small.. and they just look like a worm gone bad.. sigh..
I was rolling them into a rope and then trying to shape..
does anyone have any tricks that might help?
Please this cake is supposed to be delivered on Friday..
Thanks
Sherri
It appears to me that the "K" is made out of Royal Icing sitting on top of what could be gumpaste but looks more like chocolate. Could be why your "K" isn't coming out the same.

Maybe if you draw the K to the size and shape you need on baking paper, then use that as a guide to shape the gumpaste... might be easier than working 'freehand'.
I think Lazy_Susan could be right - looks like royal to me too.

When I do Monograms I always print out what I want on my computer, then the letters are the right size and shape. Place wax paper over it because it is more transparent than parchment. Then use that as a template to pipe over or place gumpaste/fondant on. Peel it off once it dries. Always works really well for me. HTH
I use a small extruder, a copy of the monogram under the parchment paper sitting on styrofoam, then stick in toothpicks at the harder curves to hold the gumpaste. Don't stick the picks into the gumpaste, just sort of wrap it around the area. Helps get it to stay in place at the curves or bends.
Hope this sounds OK!
Good Luck!
I don't know if this is what you need, but Wilton makes fondant letter molds (I think they are new and they only come in one font). I saw them at Michaels. HTH.
You might be making it too thick.
As suggested above, try using an extruder or clay gun to make a thin rope. That might work better.
I would use a sugarcraft gun to extrude the gumpaste rope. That will make it very even and you can make it as long as you want.
It will also help to print out/trace the pattern on paper and place a wax paper over it before shaping the extruded gumpaste rope.
