Hi Everyone,
I hope that you guys can help me!
I've had a request for a birthday cake with a rock hunting theme. I know I will use the chocolate rocks but I am totally lost on what to do.
I am so use to doing frilly cakes that I just hope I can come through on this one!
Any ideas would be appreciated!

How big does it need to be? How many does it need to feed? what id you did a big rock, like a 3D one?(i assume you are talking about just regular rocks, right?)

Lol, yes just regular old rocks!
It only needs to feed 20, the guy that it's for is an avid rock hunter.
I was thinking of incorporating the small chocolate rocks but I am having the hardest time coming up with the design.

What if you used the ball pan and made one big one and also the mini ball pan for some smaller ones? That's pretty much all I'm coming up with right now.

It's an interesting hobby, I don't think I've ever heard of it. I do live in Florida though.

What if you pressed the rocks into the side of the cake, mosaic-style? Does the client want any writing on the cake? Of course, I'm thinking "Happy Birthday, Joe. You Rock!" icon_rolleyes.gif

My mother-in-law is an avid rock hunter and has been known to sneak rocks where she shouldn't (it's actually not permitted in some places). We always joke that she's going to get arrested for stealing rocks. On a cake for her, I'd have to include an arrest notice or a pair of handcuffs - hee hee!

Good luck - wish I had some more ideas for you!

To go off the "ball cakes" I would do a larger one with 3-5 smaller ones. I would do some of the smaller one whole and some half. Then perhaps take a slice out of the top of the larer one and make it look like the rock was "broken open" and have the inside look like a geode (sp?) you know the crystals. You could color some rock candy lavendar and stick it in the "cracked open" area I would accent with the chocolate rocks and maybe make a gumpaste shovel and pick. Just an idea

Collectors of rocks are called Rock Hounds. Maybe something with a Hounddog and some candy rocks?

What about making the cake look like a pet rock? You know the ones that used to be a big fad in the late 60's early 70's?! thumbs_up.gif

I like the geode idea combined with the rock mosaic...maybe the geode could go on top?

How about a Petoskey stone pattern on one of the little ones. It is a very identifiable stone when polished.
